Reiss Nelson was the unlikely hero on Sunday as Arsenal retook top spot in the English Premier League with a 5-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest.
Nelson was introduced for the first time in the Premier League this season after Bukayo Saka was forced off with a concerning injury for England coach Gareth Southgate just weeks ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
Saka set up the opening goal for Gabriel Martinelli after just five minutes before being replaced due to an ankle injury.

Nelson struck his first Premier League goal since July 2020 early in the second half to give Arsenal breathing space.
He added a second just three minutes later and then teed up Thomas Partey to curl into the top corner.
“It couldn’t have got gone much better than that for me after coming on,” said Nelson, who spent last season on loan at Feyenoord. “Once the goals started going in it was a great game to play in. I have been working so hard in training waiting for my chance and I’m delighted to get it.”
Martin Odegaard rounded off a performance that shrugged off doubts over Arsenal’s ability to contend for the title by firing high past Dean Henderson 13 minutes from time.
The victory lifts Mikel Arteta’s men a point above Manchester City at the top of the table.
“It’s great to be there,” Arteta said. “It’s always a difficult to win in this league, and today we had a tricky game after traveling and playing in Europe, and I think the team responded really well.”
The Arsenal players came together to show support to teammate Pablo Mari before kickoff.
Mari, who is on loan at AC Monza, was stabbed during a knife attack in an Italian supermarket last week that left one person dead.
That incident put Arsenal’s bad week on the pitch into perspective after a 1-1 draw at Southampton was followed by a 2-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Europa League.
At Old Trafford, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford said there is a different energy at the club now and that he is feeling fully motivated after poor performances last season cast doubt about his future.
Rashford on Sunday scored his 100th goal for the club in a 1-0 victory over West Ham United, becoming the first Manchester United player to hit that mark since Wayne Rooney in 2009.
His towering header saw him equal his league tally of four goals for the whole of last season in only 12 games. The 25-year-old scored only five goals in 32 matches last season.
“It’s a complete different energy around the club and the training ground,” Rashford told Sky Sports. “That puts me in a better headspace and I feel really motivated now.”
“I was struggling at times with more mental things. It wasn’t really my own performance, but other things off the pitch. That’s the biggest difference from last season,” he said. “I get that it’s your job to speak about what happens on the pitch, but for players, we have to get into the right headspace for every game. Too often last season, I wasn’t... I wasn’t surprised by some of the stuff that was happening.”

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal would be motivated by criticism ahead of the Clasico, Barcelona assistant coach Marcus Sorg said yesterday. Teenage winger Yamal has been in the spotlight in the Spanish capital after joking that Real Madrid “steal” and “complain” during an appearance on a social media stream. Champions Barca face Real Madrid today in La Liga at the Santiago Bernabeu, looking for a fifth consecutive win over their rivals. “Lamine is a top player and I think [the criticism] will be motivating for him,” Sorg told a news conference. “I hope we all see him tomorrow [give] the best performance.” The 18-year-old Spain
‘A HISTORIC moment’: ‘I think we all need to take a step back and appreciate Leo Messi is playing in Major League Soccer,’ league commissioner Don Garber said Lionel Messi raised the Golden Boot. He then got Inter Miami started with his head. The Argentine opened the scoring with a diving header in the first half, then capped the scoring in the 96th minute as Inter Miami opened the MLS playoffs with a 3-1 win over Nashville SC in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference best-of-three first-round series on Friday night. Messi and Ian Fray had the assists on Tadeo Allende’s second-half tally for Inter Miami, who now get two chances to advance out of the first round for the first time in Messi’s two-and-a-half-year tenure with the team. ‘COMPLETE GAME’: ‘To be honest, I’m not sure about the history, but I’m very happy about what I did today,’ Yamamoto said through a translator after the game Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched a World Series game from another era. Sandy Koufax had October outings like this, and so did Orel Hershiser, but those types of performances have vanished in modern baseball. Until this 178cm starter from Japan delivered like the aces of old. Yamamoto threw a four-hitter for his second consecutive complete game, the first in the World Series since 2015, and the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 on Saturday night to tie their best-of-seven matchup at one game apiece. “It’s kind of the throwback,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “When he starts a game, he
Japan’s narrow defeat by Australia showed they can compete with the best teams in the world, coach Eddie Jones said after his side fell to a 19-15 loss yesterday. Australia coach Joe Schmidt led the Wallabies for the first time against Eddie Jones, his predecessor and now Japan coach. During Jones’ second tenure as Australia coach, the Wallabies lost seven of nine tests and were eliminated in group play at the 2023 World Cup. “What I’m super pleased about is that now we [Japan] are a team that stays in the fight,” Jones told reporters. “We kept going, we could have won
