After exactly 1,000 minutes without finding the net, Timo Werner on Monday ended his English Premier League goal drought.
The Chelsea striker tapped in at the far post after Olivier Giroud had failed to connect with a high cross to complete a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
“I think for a striker it is much harder when you come into the situation and you don’t have chances,” Werner told Sky Sports. “I had in the past a lot of chances and I missed them, and also today my team brought me a lot of situations where I can score and it is important to keep going like today.”

The summer signing from RB Leipzig netted in the 39th minute against Newcastle, making it an even 1,000 minutes on the pitch since his previous league goal on Nov. 7 last year.
The Germany international also assisted the opener eight minutes earlier, a cross spilled by Karl Darlow and prodded in by Giroud.
“As a striker you always want to score, the last month was not so [good] and I wasn’t happy with not scoring, but at the end it is a team sport and when we win it is good, then I help the team with assists and winning penalties, and now I am scoring and I am very glad I scored,” Werner said.
A fourth straight league win since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as coach lifted Chelsea back into the fourth UEFA Champions League place.
While Chelsea are accustomed to playing in Europe’s elite competition, West Ham United have never qualified, but the east London club are only behind Chelsea in fifth place due to an inferior goal-difference after beating Sheffield United 3-0, despite having their only recognized striker, Michail Antonio, out injured.
Instead, Jesse Lingard, who is on loan from Manchester United, sparked the attack — although the goals came from Declan Rice, Issa Diop and Ryan Fredericks, lifting the team above ailing reigning champions Liverpool.
“Obviously, I wouldn’t have believed it at the start of the season if someone had said that,” said West Ham manager David Moyes, whose team were deep in relegation trouble this time last year. “It nearly feels uneasy talking like this. The teams around us are top, top teams and we are going to have to play incredibly well to be there, but I think we’ve got another gear or two to what we’ve shown tonight.”
Rice opened the scoring from the penalty spot — West Ham’s first spot-kick of the season — in the 41st minute after Lingard was brought down by Chris Basham.
Diop added the second after he was left unmarked to nod in Aaron Cresswell’s corner and substitute Fredericks tucked in the third in stoppage-time.
The Blades traveled to London knowing a win would lift them out of last place. Instead they experienced another defeat and lost key defender John Egan to injury.
“At this level you can’t make it easy for the opposition and we gift-wrapped two goals,” Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said. “The timing of the first one is terrible. I thought we would be competitive, which we were. I thought we were well in the game up until that moment. We had a foothold in the game.”
“Then we started the second half well, but then conceded from a set-play,” he said. “The manner of the goals is really poor.”
Taiwanese gymnast Tang Chia-hung on Sunday topped the men’s horizontal bar event at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Cup in Osijek, Croatia, scoring 15.233 to take his third title this season. The Daredevils yesterday took eight catches in the final as they eked out a victory in the Taiwan Cricket Triangular Tournament against PCCT at Yingfeng Cricket Ground in Taipei’s Songshan District. PCCT’s batting lineup collapsed after they asked the Daredevils to bowl in the T20 decider of the weekend tournament that also involved the Formosa Cricket Club. PCCT were bundled out for 76 in 16.2 overs against a disciplined Daredevils attack. Ninad Malwade was the top scorer in the innings with 21, but he was among those who offered chances to the fielders. Shane Ferreira and Jason Cameron took three wickets each, with
This year’s Taiwan Athletics Open, which offers Taiwanese athletes an opportunity to compete against their international peers, would be held under a new name after its organizers had earlier announced the event’s cancelation. In a statement issued yesterday, the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association said the competition would still take place on June 6-7 at Banciao Stadium, but under the name “New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026.” The event was given a new name to emphasize its local identity and conform with the international practice of naming World Athletics Tour events after cities, the association said. It said it would soon
Taiwanese shortstop Cheng Tsung-che on Friday made history for the Boston Red Sox’s Triple A affiliate, hitting the Worcester Red Sox’s first cycle, while netting two runs, as they beat fellow Taiwan teammate Stuart Fairchild’s Columbus Clippers. The 24-year-old former Pittsburgh Pirates prospect went 4-4, completing a full cycle, starting with a triple in the second inning off Ryan Webb in the WooSox’s 9-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians’ Triple A affiliate. He scored in the same inning after teammate Vinny Capra, a fellow former Pirate, grounded out. The Pingtung County native followed that up with a walk in the third, an
