Victoria Azarenka on Thursday came from a set down to stun record-chasing Serena Williams and set up a US Open final against Japan’s Naomi Osaka.
Azarenka recovered from a 6-1 hammering in the first set to win the next two 6-3, 6-3 and schedule her first Grand Slam final appearance in seven years.
The former world No. 1 is enjoying a remarkable renaissance in New York that the Belarusian credits to finding humility, following several years disrupted by injury and a custody battle over her son.

“I think when you’re coming up from kind of nothing, then you become a No. 1 player in the world, sometimes you can start to think you’re invincible and that you’re better than everybody, and it’s not true,” Azarenka said. “So the ego starts to grow. It’s very hurtful when it gets damaged. Instead of getting the ego damaged, I tried to remove that and learn from my mistakes.”
After a first set plagued by double faults and unforced errors, Azarenka turned the tide in the second, upping her service game and getting more returns in play as she began to dictate lengthy rallies.
“I knew I needed to step up with my aggressivity, play a little smarter, play with a little bit more width of the court and bring the intensity up,” she said.
The two-time Grand Slam winner had never before beaten Williams in a Grand Slam.
Her last appearance in a Grand Slam final came in the US Open in 2013 when Williams beat her. Azarenka also suffered a heartbreaking loss to Williams in the 2012 US Open final, when she served for the match at 5-3 in the third set, only to lose 7-5.
Azarenka was determined that history would not repeat itself. Serving for the match, she hit a double fault, before smashing her fastest serve of the night at 175kph.
When Williams then challenged and lost an ace that was called in on the next point, it was Azarenka’s match.
“I’ve been there before. Today was gonna be different,” Azarenka said.
Williams said that she started the 1 hour, 56 minute match “really strong.”
“Then she just kept fighting. She just changed, and started playing better and better. Maybe I took a little too much off the gas pedal at some point,” Williams said.
The loss ended Williams’ hopes of claiming a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title at Flushing Meadows.
It has been more than three years since Williams won her 23rd at the 2017 Australian Open.
Azarenka’s last Grand Slam title came at the 2013 Australian Open, when she retained the crown she had won a year earlier.
The 31-year-old’s march to the US Open final comes after she claimed last month’s Western and Southern Open in New York. Her rejuvenation has seen her rise to world No. 27.
Azarenka has been smiling and dancing on court, and even meditating during breaks. She says she is enjoying her tennis more than ever and credits it to a new-found maturity.
“I started taking more responsibility for what I do, for what happens to me, and responsibility of how I’m going to react to situations,” she said.
Azarenka, who had a son in December 2016, is bidding to become only the fourth woman to win a Grand Slam singles in the Open era after having a child.
She faces a formidable opponent in two-time Grand Slam winner and fourth seed Naomi Osaka, who defeated 28th seed Jennifer Brady 7-6 (7/1), 3-6, 6-3.
Osaka walked onto the court wearing a mask emblazoned with the name of Philando Castile, a black man who was shot dead by a police officer during a traffic stop in Minnesota in 2016.
She says that she is getting strength from wearing different masks honoring victims of racial injustice and police brutality throughout the tournament.
“I do think it’s a very big motivating factor for me just to try to, like, get the names out to as many people as I can,” Osaka said.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Connelly Early on Tuesday struck out 11 in five shutout innings to match a franchise record during his MLB debut against the Oakland Athletics. “Pretty sick performance,” teammate Romy Gonzalez said. “It was fun to watch.” The only other Red Sox starter to rack up 11 strikeouts in his first career game was Don Aase versus the Milwaukee Brewers on July 26, 1977. “It was amazing, just to go out there and have that first opportunity,” Early said after getting the win in a 6-0 victory. “A long day of travel yesterday and just getting to the field, seeing
ELEVEN STRIKEOUTS: Blake Snell allowed two singles and two walks against the Rockies as he ended a personal three-game skid with his first win since Aug. 16 Blake Snell on Wednesday struck out a season-high 11 in six innings, while Mookie Betts hit a grand slam in the eighth as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies 9-0 for their fourth straight win. Helped by their third series sweep of the Rockies this MLB season, the Dodgers increased their National League West lead to three games over the San Diego Padres, who lost 2-1 at home to the Cincinnati Reds. Betts went four for five with five RBIs, capped by his seventh career slam on a 3-0 pitch from reliever Anthony Molina to make it 8-0. Andy Pages and
‘DEVASTATED’: Argentina’s win was a reversal of their 28-24 defeat last week, with Australian forward Fraser McReight adding that ‘we did the same thing last week’ Argentina flyhalf Santiago Carreras punished an undisciplined Australia with 23 points off the tee as the Pumas held on grimly for a 28-26 win in Sydney yesterday to breathe new life into their Rugby Championship campaign. A try-fest beckoned in afternoon sunshine at Sydney Football Stadium, but Argentina needed only one through captain Julian Montoya, with Carreras doing the damage with seven penalties and a conversion in front of a sell-out crowd. A week after letting a 14-point lead slip in a 28-24 defeat to Australia in Townsville, Argentina saw most of a 21-point advantage erased in the final quarter as the
China’s state-run People’s Daily newspaper on Monday published an essay about Chinese basketball it said was written by LeBron James, but a representative for the NBA star said on Thursday that the article was based on a series of interviews. The paper, better known as the mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, had said James authored the essay, “Basketball is a Bridge that Connects Us,” a tribute to Chinese players and fans of the sport written in the first person. “LeBron James Pens an Article in the People’s Daily,” read a post published on the newspaper’s official WeChat account.
