Sadio Mane on Sunday helped Liverpool keep alive their bid to set a new English Premier League points record as the champions beat Aston Villa 2-0 to restore a 23-point lead over Manchester City, who were beaten at Southampton.
Just four days after City thrashed Liverpool 4-0 to seemingly lay down a marker for next season’s title race, both sides showed why there has been a chasm between them in the Reds’ romp to a first league title in 30 years.
Liverpool were far from their best in their first outing as champions at an empty Anfield, but still ground out the three points in a manner they so often have this season.

Mane broke struggling Villa’s stubborn resistance by smashing Naby Keita’s pass in off the underside of the crossbar from close range for his 20th goal of the season, before substitute Curtis Jones rounded off a big weekend for the 19-year-old after signing a new five-year contract on Saturday.
The victory moved Liverpool onto 89 points and they need four wins from their remaining five games to surpass City’s record 100-point total from 2017-2018.
“We are where we are because we win difficult games,” Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. “It was not a brilliant performance, but it was a good performance that gets us three points.”
Villa remain in the relegation zone, one point from safety as they battle to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
City, by contrast, saw another dominant display go unrewarded as Che Adams’ spectacular first goal for Southampton claimed a 1-0 win.
Pep Guardiola’s men had 74 percent possession and had 26 shots, but could not find a way past Alex McCarthy as Fernandinho hit the post, and Gabriel Jesus, David Silva and Bernardo Silva all wasted good chances.
“It was a little bit of a resume of this season — one mistake and they punished us,” Guardiola said. “We played a really good performance, but it was not enough.”
At the other end of the table, West Ham United edged closer to survival, despite twice blowing a lead to draw 2-2 at Newcastle United.
Shock winners against Chelsea last week, West Ham were ahead within four minutes at St James’ Park when Michail Antonio pounced after Jamaal Lascelles failed to cut out Jarrod Bowen’s cross.
Newcastle were level after 17 minutes when Allan Saint-Maximin slipped in Emil Krafth and his cross was converted by Miguel Almiron.
Tomas Soucek restored West Ham’s lead when he lashed home after Declan Rice headed Ryan Fredericks’ corner against the crossbar, but Newcastle equalized 92 seconds later when Jonjo Shelvey beat the offside trap, took Dwight Gayle’s pass and beat Lucasz Fabianski from close range.
After earning their first away point since December last year, West Ham are four points clear of the relegation zone with five games left.
John Egan’s first top-flight goal gave Sheffield United a 1-1 draw at Burnley as both teams’ hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Europa League were dented.
James Tarkowski put Burnley ahead just before halftime, but Egan netted with 10 minutes left.
United remain in eighth place, which could be good enough for a place in next season’s Europa League should Manchester City’s ban from European competition be upheld on appeal, while Burnley move up to ninth, two points behind the Blades.
Manchester United on Tuesday confirmed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season, tasking him with leading the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League. “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honor,” said Carrick, 44, who won 12 major trophies in his 12-year playing career at United. The former midfielder previously had an unbeaten three-game stint as caretaker boss at Old Trafford in 2021. Carrick then took on his first permanent managerial role at second-tier Middlesbrough in October 2022 and was sacked in June last year after the club finished 10th in the
Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg on Wednesday was ruled out for the second half of their 118-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets after the No. 1 pick sprained his left ankle in the first half. Flagg was called for a foul while defending against Peyton Watson and turned the ankle as he fell to the floor with 6 minutes, 1 second left in the second quarter. Flagg limped to the bench and continued to the locker room, but returned for the final 2 minutes, 35 seconds before the break. The 19-year-old did not come out for the second half before the announcement that
Yassine Bounou on Wednesday saved two penalties, while Youssef en-Nesyri netted the decisive spot-kick as hosts Morocco secured a 4-2 shoot-out victory over Nigeria following a 0-0 draw in a tense Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in Rabat. Morocco, seeking their first continental title in 50 years, are to face 2021 winners Senegal in Sunday’s decider in Rabat, while Nigeria take on Egypt in the third-place playoff tomorrow. The 120 minutes before the shoot-out had few clear-cut chances for either side, but it was Morocco who created more opportunities, although they were denied by some fine saves from Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Sunday sparked defending champions Oklahoma City to victory, while Anthony Edwards led Minnesota’s last-minute fightback to beat San Antonio. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 29 points while adding eight assists and five rebounds in the Thunder’s 124-112 home victory over Miami, improving the NBA’s best record to 33-7 after outscoring the Heat 70-53 in the second half. “We locked in defensively. We were finally able to get some stops,” Thunder guard Aaron Wiggins said. “We were able to get out in transition a little bit, get going offensively and find the flow.” Jalen Williams scored 18 points, while
