While being sentenced this week for leading the George Washington Bridge lane-closing plot to punish a political opponent of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, David Wildstein said he had “willingly drank the Kool-Aid” of a man he met in high school.
Wildstein, who was only sentenced to three years’ probation even though it was his idea to put the revenge plot into motion, said that he and the two fellow former Christie allies who he helped convict “put our faith in a man who neither earned it nor deserved it.”
Nearly 40 years after serving as the statistician on the high-school baseball team where Christie was the catcher, Wildstein’s punishment might include running a nonprofit foundation for a former Major League Baseball (MBL) player.

Charlie Hayes, who played third base for the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies and other teams, offered to let Wildstein perform his 500 hours of community service by running a nonprofit foundation he is launching to connect underprivileged youth with the game of baseball.
“While I surely do not condone his behavior. David has impressed me as a person who regrets a terrible decision and is worthy of a second chance,” Hayes wrote to Judge Susan Wigenton.
Wildstein is also writing a book with former Yankees pitcher Fritz Peterson.
Other than appeals from and a lingering lawsuit from New Jersey residents who say they were affected by the lane closure, Wednesday’s sentence brings the saga to a close.
Christie was never charged in the scheme and has denied trial testimony from multiple people that he was told about the lane closures before they happened and while they were ongoing.
Peppered with questions about why Christie was not charged, US Attorney William Fitzpatrick said that the government charged everyone who “we could build a case against.”
“We believe the people that could properly be held criminally accountable were held criminally accountable,” he said.
The lack of criminal charges has not stopped Christie from facing backlash in the court of public opinion.
Christie’s approval rating hovered around 70 percent in early 2013; two recent polls put it at a dismal 15 percent.
His campaign for the US Republican presidential nomination foundered and he later admitted it was a factor in his not being named as US President Donald Trump’s running mate.
Former Christie staffer Bridget Kelly was sentenced in March to 18 months in prison, and former-Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive Bill Baroni was sentenced to 24 months.
They have appealed their convictions and are free on bail, tentatively scheduled to report to prison in late September.
Omar Marmoush’s stunning long-range strike on Tuesday upstaged Kevin de Bruyne on the Manchester City great’s Etihad farewell. Marmoush let fly from about 30m to put City ahead in their 3-1 win against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. The victory moved Pep Guardiola’s team up to third in the standings and left qualification for the UEFA Champions League in their own hands heading into the last round of the season. “It’s really important. To be in the Champions League after what happened [this season] will be really nice,” the City manager said. De Bruyne was making his final home appearance for City before
TIGHT FINISH: Napoli only needed to do the same as or better than Inter, who won their game against Como 2-0 on the same day, leaving Napoli with a one-point lead The two players who Antonio Conte wanted more than any others secured Napoli their second Serie A title in three years on Friday. Scott McTominay scored with an acrobatic bicycle kick before halftime and Romelu Lukaku doubled the lead with a solo goal after the break in the decisive 2-0 home win over Cagliari. Conte became the first coach to win the Italian championship with three different teams. “Everyone contributed to this — but the coach most of all,” Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo said. “Napoli needed him to get back on top. He’s phenomenal.” Comparing it to his three Serie A titles won

SSC Napoli coach Antonio Conte has dragged the team back from disaster and restored them to the top of Italian Serie A, but his future at the Scudetto winners is in doubt even after a triumphant season. The fiery 55-year-old has exceeded preseason expectations and bolstered his reputation as a serial winner by guiding Napoli to their fourth Scudetto, and second in three seasons. However, he might well be on his way in the summer after just one season at the helm as his charged relationship with Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has simmered throughout the campaign. Conte has said
