IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden on Sunday broke his right collarbone in a crash in Texas after his car was slammed to its side and slid along the front-stretch wall with the top of the cockpit exposed.
Newgarden also had a small fracture in his right hand from the accident. His car was crushed after Conor Daly’s car got loose and then snapped into him.
“I’m banged up a little bit, but I’m generally OK,” Newgarden said in a statement. “I am feeling a little pain, but I hope to be ready to rock and go again soon.”

Newgarden was transported by helicopter from the track to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas after the accident.
The race never went green again after the accident on lap 42 of the Firestone 600. Workers were still doing repairs to the SAFER barrier when the race was red-flagged after 71 laps, as a thunderstorm moved into the area and over the track.
With more rain possible yesterday, the resumption of the race was scheduled for Aug. 27.
Daly’s car got loose coming out of Turn 4 and snapped into the No. 21 car driven by Newgarden. After the initial contact, the cars started drifting down the track before pushing back up, with Newgarden’s car on its side when hitting and sliding along the wall.
Both drivers were able to climb out of their cars. However, after Newgarden got out and stood briefly by his car, he crumbled into a sitting position on the track while talking to safety officials and indicating issues on the right side of his body.
After being put on a stretcher and before being loaded onto an ambulance, Newgarden waved and gave a thumbs-up to spectators — with his left arm.
“I feel bad for both Conor and myself, but I’m glad Conor is OK as well,” said Newgarden, who thanked IndyCar and track safety crews for how they responded to the accident. “Luckily I am all right. Thank you again to everyone who helped me.”
Daly was taken to the infield care center, where he was checked and cleared. He spoke there with Newgarden, his long-time friend.
“I apologized to him in there, because it was my mistake, for sure,” Daly said. “He’s a tough kid; I grew up with him. I feel so bad.”
Daly, who had not yet pitted for new tires, said the rear end of his car lost all grip as it drifted from Turns 3 and 4.
“I lost it in front of Josef,” he said.
Both cars were heavily damaged, as was the SAFER barrier that absorbed the impact when Newgarden hit the wall.
“In a situation like that, it doesn’t really matter whose car it is. Obviously I went by and saw it was bright green, and just asked if Josef was all right,” car owner and teammate Ed Carpenter said.
“As a team owner, you don’t really care about the car,” Carpenter added.
The scheduled 248-lap race had been postponed late on Saturday night after unsuccessful attempts to dry the track following afternoon rain. The start on Sunday was delayed about 40 minutes while officials continued to dry the track.
When the red flag was displayed, the race was 54 laps shy of being an official race.
Marty Armstrong, a tire changer for AJ Foyt Racing, received stitches on his lower back after an air hose got caught up on Jack Hawksworth’s car as the No. 41 pulled out of the pit stall.
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Shohei Ohtani on Thursday delivered his first two-homer game of the season and had six RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers poured it on with five long balls in a 19-2 victory over the visiting Athletics. Max Muncy, Andy Pages and James Outman also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who left no doubt by taking a 13-2 lead following a seven-run third inning. Muncy and Kim Hye-seong each had three hits for Los Angeles. Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer led off a bullpen game by allowing two runs in four innings. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (1-1) finished with four scoreless innings after he
