Huang Ting-ying of Taiwan on Tuesday won a gold medal in the 25km women’s elite points race of the Asian Cycling Championships in Izu, Japan, defending the title she first earned last year.
On Saturday last week, Huang placed fifth in the 107.1km women’s elite road race of the championship that started four days earlier.
In a Facebook post, Huang said she was nervous at the beginning of Tuesday’s race as she felt the pressure to defend her championship.
“All I could do was to remain calm and face the test, so I told myself to get rid of the fear and look well into my inner self,” she wrote. “Winning a title was not meant to show myself off to others. I was just trying to give myself a positive score for this stage of my career.”
She thanked her sponsors and the national cycling association, particularly her coach and technical staff for always being near her throughout the competition.
She also expressed a special warmth for her husband’s words of encouragement right before she pedaled off: “Use defense as offense, and silently observe the changing circumstances.”
