Russia’s Grigory Drozd defended his WBC cruiserweight title for the first time on Friday, defeating Poland’s Lukasz Janik with a ninth-round technical knockout.
Cheered on by a raucous and nationalist home crowd in the Russian capital, Drozd weakened Janik with a succession of body shots before knocking him down in the seventh round.
Janik went into a defensive mode as he tried to last the distance, but the referee stopped the fight in the ninth, with the Pole taking a pounding and being barely able to defend himself.

“I think it was my biggest fight,” Drozd said in televised comments.
“I dedicate this victory to all Russians,” he said.
Janik was a late replacement for fellow Pole Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, who lost the WBC title to Drozd in September last year and pulled out of the rematch this month due to an infection.
Drozd moves to a 40-1 record with 28 knockouts.
Janik dropped to 28-3 with 15 knockouts.
On the undercard, Russia’s Rakhim Chakhkiev won the vacant IBO cruiserweight title, knocking out the previously unbeaten Junior Anthony Wright of the US in the eighth round.
There was also a first-round knockout win for former heavyweight world title contender Alexander Povetkin, who stopped Cuban-Irish fighter Mike Perez.

If the Wild finally break through and win their first playoff series in a decade, Minnesota’s top line likely will be the reason. The Wild tied the series with a 5-2 win on Tuesday. Matt Boldy had three goals and an assist in the first two games, while Kirill Kaprizov produced two goals and three assists. The Minnesota Timberwolves, with so many promising performances spoiled by late mistakes fresh in their memory bank, sure timed this strong finish well. He looks like he could play 48 minutes,” said teammate Anthony Edwards, who had 29 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Julius Randle added 22 points for the Wolves, who outscored
From a commemorative jersey to a stadium in his name, Argentine soccer organizers are planning a slew of tributes to their late “Captain” Pope Francis, eulogized as the ultimate team player. Tributes to the Argentine pontiff, a lifelong lover of the game, who died on Monday at the age of 88, have been peppered with soccer metaphors in his homeland. “Francisco. What a player,” the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) said, describing the first pope from Latin America and the southern hemisphere as a generational talent who “never hogged the ball” and who showed the world “the importance of having an Argentine captain,
