Barcelona’s star front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar brought up a century of goals in all competitions as the Catalans moved five points clear at the top of La Liga with a 6-0 humbling of Getafe on Tuesday.
All three were on target inside 28 minutes as Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before teeing up Suarez to volley home, while Neymar was left with the simple task of registering the 100th goal between the trio from a Suarez pass.
Xavi Hernandez then curled home a stunning fourth before Suarez made it 5-0 with a similar finish into the far corner and Messi rounded off the scoring in typical style on his favored left foot early in the second half.

“Luckily the first shots on goal we had went in, the team played very well in the first half and that is the most important thing,” Suarez said. “I don’t know if there is a key to our success. There is total commitment among the team and the fans. We are obliged to win important things and we are entering the most important stage of the season.”
Barca boss Luis Enrique had resisted the temptation to rest any of his front three, despite making four changes from the side that won 2-0 against RCD Espanyol on Saturday with one eye on next week’s Champions League semi-final, first leg against Bayern Munich.
That decision was richly rewarded in a stunning first-half display that tore the helpless visitors to shreds.

Messi put his recent yips from the penalty spot behind him as he opened the scoring by chipping the ball straight down the middle of the goal in the style made famous by Czech legend Antonin Panenka in the 1976 European Championships after Suarez had been felled by Alvaro Arroyo.
Getafe nearly drew level moments later when Claudio Bravo made a brilliant recovery save to claw Fredy Hinestroza’s lob to safety to make up for his original poor positioning.
Suarez put them 2-0 up with a sumptuous volley from Messi’s inviting cross and the Uruguayan then turned provider for Neymar to bring up the century.
Moments later, Xavi scored what could well be his final goal at the Camp Nou — the veteran is expected to move to Qatar at the end of the season — by curling the ball high into the far corner.
Xavi’s flick then set up Suarez to finish in similar style to register his 21st goal of the season before the break.
Despite the upcoming date with former coach Pep Guardiola and Bayern in eight days time, there was little let up from the hosts after the break.
However, the goals did dry up after Messi had curled home his 38th league goal of the campaign two minutes into the second period to move within one of Cristiano Ronaldo in the race to be La Liga’s top goal-scorer.
The four-time World Player of the Year came close to a seventh hat-trick of the season six minutes from time, but Vicente Guaita made a fine save to turn his free-kick to safety.
Elsewhere, David Moyes’ Real Sociedad salvaged a point in the Basque derby away to Athletic Bilbao, despite playing most of the second half with 10 men.
Aritz Aduriz put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot after he had been brought down inside the area by Mike Gonzalez, who saw red for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
However, a wonderful finish from leftback Alberto de la Bella on his weaker right foot seven minutes later earned Sociedad a point.
At the bottom, Levante UD moved six points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over doomed Cordoba thanks to David Barral’s first-half winner.
HSIEH ADVANCES: In the women’s doubles, Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei was to play in the second round last night, but Taiwan’s Ray Ho exited in the men’s doubles It is more than 10 years since Grigor Dimitrov reached his sole Wimbledon semi-final and back then it still seemed a reasonable bet that the Bulgarian once dubbed “Baby Federer” would win a Grand Slam title. There were semi-final runs at the US Open and Australian Open after that, but it has never quite happened and despite him still being ranked No. 21, it most likely never will. Dimitrov, 34, remains one of the most stylish players on the circuit though, with his elegant single-handed backhand and smooth all-court game a rare reminder of how tennis was before the power merchants turned
INJURY TURMOIL: Despite stunning French Open champions Paolini and Errani to advance, Chan was forced to pull out after her partner’s tearful women’s singles defeat Last year’s mixed doubles champions Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and Poland’s Jan Zielinski on Monday crashed out of the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, leaving the Taiwanese star focused on pursuing a fifth women’s doubles title in London, while a partner injury forced compatriot Chan Hao-ching to give up on her doubles campaign. Hsieh and Zielinksi, who last year also won the Australia Open title, narrowly lost their opening set 7-6 (9/7), before Britain’s Joe Salisbury and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani stunned the former champions 6-3 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The Taiwanese-Polish duo had been dominant in the first two
Real Madrid’s FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund had taken three crazy turns during nine minutes of second-half stoppage time when Marcel Sabitzer chested the ball and sent a right-footed volley toward Thibaut Courtois’ post. Courtois leapt to his right, extended the long arm on his 2m frame and just managed to get his gloved fingertips on the ball, knocking it down. Courtois hit the ground as the ball bounded up. He looked skyward, planted his right hand to regain his balance, grabbed the ball with both hands on the second bounce and fell onto it with his chest. Sabitzer turned
TAIWANESE WIN: Chan Hao-ching and Wu Fang-hsien and their partners won their first-round matches in the women’s doubles at the All England Lawn Tennis Club Late-night finishes and five-set matches are becoming a habit for Taylor Fritz at Wimbledon this year. On Wednesday, he wrapped up his win over Gabriel Diallo before the match was suspended — making sure the fifth-seeded American would not have to come back on court for a fourth straight day. Fritz overcame a bloodied elbow to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/0), 4-6, 6-3 on No. 1 Court a day after he finished off another five-set win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a match that was halted on Monday at about 10:15pm after Fritz forced a fifth set with Wimbledon’s 11pm curfew looming.
