Earl Lloyd, the first African-American to play in a National Basketball Association game, has died at the age of 86.
Friends of the Lloyd family called the WXYZ television station in Detroit, Michigan, to report Lloyd’s death, which was later confirmed by his alma mater, West Virginia State University.
“The State family mourns the loss of a fellow Yellow Jacket and trailblazer who was a true champion both on and off of the basketball court,” West Virginia State University president Brian Hemphill said in a statement, which did not identify the cause of Lloyd’s death.
“When Earl stepped out on the court on that fateful date in 1950, this remarkable man rightfully earned his place in the historic civil rights movement and, more important, he opened the door to equality in America,” the statement said.
Lloyd made his first NBA appearance with the Washington Capitols on Oct. 31, 1950.
Two other African-American players, Charles Cooper with the Celtics and Nat Clifton with the Knicks, both came into the NBA in the same 1950-1951 season as Lloyd.
However, the league schedule meant that the distinction of becoming the first African-American actually to play in an NBA game went to Lloyd, nicknamed “The Big Cat.”
The Capitols folded in 1951, but Lloyd went on to win a championship in 1955 with the Syracuse Nationals and finished his 10-year playing career with the Detroit Pistons.
At the time of his retirement, Lloyd was ranked 43rd on the NBA career scoring list with 4,682 points.
He went on to coach the Pistons from 1971 to 1972, and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2003.
Lloyd, a Virginia native, lived in Crossville, Tennessee, at the time of his death.

TIGHT FINISH: Napoli only needed to do the same as or better than Inter, who won their game against Como 2-0 on the same day, leaving Napoli with a one-point lead The two players who Antonio Conte wanted more than any others secured Napoli their second Serie A title in three years on Friday. Scott McTominay scored with an acrobatic bicycle kick before halftime and Romelu Lukaku doubled the lead with a solo goal after the break in the decisive 2-0 home win over Cagliari. Conte became the first coach to win the Italian championship with three different teams. “Everyone contributed to this — but the coach most of all,” Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo said. “Napoli needed him to get back on top. He’s phenomenal.” Comparing it to his three Serie A titles won

SSC Napoli coach Antonio Conte has dragged the team back from disaster and restored them to the top of Italian Serie A, but his future at the Scudetto winners is in doubt even after a triumphant season. The fiery 55-year-old has exceeded preseason expectations and bolstered his reputation as a serial winner by guiding Napoli to their fourth Scudetto, and second in three seasons. However, he might well be on his way in the summer after just one season at the helm as his charged relationship with Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has simmered throughout the campaign. Conte has said
