In his return from a one-year doping ban, Tyson Gay finished second to Justin Gatlin, who ran a year-best 9.80 seconds in the 100m at the Athletissima Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday.
Gatlin got a great start and pulled away after 40m. Gay clocked 9.93 seconds to beat Michael Rodgers in an all-American 1-2-3.
It was a decent performance from Gay, but still far from the level that made him the second-fastest sprinter behind Usain Bolt. Gay won the 100m in Lausanne in 9.79 seconds a year ago.

“I’m happy with my time, I’ve been training all year,” Gay said. “It’s been tough training. I’ve been under a lot of stress and stuff like that, but I made it through.”
Gay, the 2007 world champion, tested positive last year for an anabolic steroid. He cooperated with the US Anti-Doping Agency’s investigation to have his doping suspension reduced to one year.
Also at the Diamond League meeting, Olympic champion Kirani James outpaced LaShawn Merritt in the final straight to post a year-leading time of 43.74 seconds in the 400m.
“LaShawn was strong and he pushed me,” James said. “I feel I’m in top shape and I’d like to carry this form to the Commonwealth Games.”
World champion Caterine Ibarguen won the women’s triple jump with a year-best leap of 14.87m.
Panama’s Alonso Edward was the surprising winner in the men’s 200m in 19.84 seconds, finishing ahead of Nickel Ashmeade and 2010 European champion Christophe Lemaitre. Yohan Blake, the Olympic runner-up, placed sixth in 20.48 seconds, slowly improving after a season marred by a hamstring injury.
World champion Bogdan Bondarenko and Andriy Protsenko both leaped 2.40m, but Bondarenko won the men’s high jump by needing one fewer attempt.
Michelle-Lee Ahye beat world championships runner-up Murielle Ahoure in a photo finish to claim the women’s 100m in 10.98 seconds.
“I felt really good and very pleased to have won my first Diamond League event,” Ahye said. “The time was good. I know that if I can get the first 20, 30 meters right, I can run a good race.”
Olympic bronze medalist Javier Culson held off a strong finish from Michael Tinsley to win the men’s 400m hurdles, while world champion Jehue Gordon finished a distant sixth.
Pascal Martinot-Lagarde made the difference in the last 20m to stun world champion David Oliver and European champion Sergey Shubenkov with a time of 13.06 seconds in the 110m hurdles.
In the men’s pole vault, Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie outclassed the field, clearing 5.87m at his first attempt.
Also, world championships runner-up Piotr Malachowski edged Jorge Fernandez in the men’s discus, Barbora Spotakova dominated the women’s javelin and Olympic champion Valerie Adams was a class apart in the women’s shot put.
IAAF world championships runner-up Mercy Cherono overtook Genzebe Dibaba in the home straight to win the women’s 3,000m, Olympic champion Greg Rutherford finished second in the men’s long jump behind Jeff Henderson, Ronald Kwemoi won the men’s 1,500m and world champion Eunice Jepkoech Sum the women’s 800m.
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Back then,
SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres

American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
