AS Monaco cruised to a 4-1 victory over 10-man Montpellier Herault in Ligue 1 on Sunday following a hat-trick from Emmanuel Riviere, while Edinson Cavani scored his first goal for Paris Saint-Germain as the French champions drew 1-1 at home with AC Ajaccio.
Radamel Falcao gave Monaco a deserved lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after Lucas Ocampos was fouled by Siaka Tiene.
Montpellier, who drew against defending champions PSG last week, leveled six minutes later when Victor Montano beat Monaco defender Ricardo Carvalho to head in Benjamin Stambouli’s cross.

Monaco restored their lead just before halftime when Riviere won the ball off Daniel Congre and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Laurent Pionnier.
Riviere doubled his tally in the 57th minute and matters got even worse for Montpellier when Congre was sent off six minutes later following a foul on Yannick Ferreira Carrasco.
Riviere completed his hat-trick nine minutes from time, heading into an empty net after Pionnier had parried Ferreira Carrasco’s deflected shot.

TITLE CONTENDERS
Despite being one of the three promoted sides, Monaco are widely expected to be the closest challengers to PSG this season after spending heavily in the off-season. They have won both their opening games, while PSG have drawn both.
“It’s perfect at the moment,” Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri said. “Two games, six points. Today was very difficult, against a team which plays very compact, but Monaco played well, I’m happy. It is important to win, but also to play well. I’m happy with that. Now I want to see how things continue, it won’t be easy.”
In Paris, Ajaccio took a shock lead in the ninth minute when Adrian Mutu cut the ball back to Benoit Pedretti, who unleashed a stunning first-time shot into the top-right corner.
That was Ajaccio’s only shot all match as PSG dominated and had 39 attempts on goal, but they were frustrated by an organized defense and outstanding goalkeeping from Guillermo Ochoa.
Thiago Silva headed a corner onto the crossbar in the 81st minute, before Cavani — who was signed from SSC Napoli for 64 million euros (US$84 million) — leveled five minutes later.
Silva again hit the crossbar in stoppage-time with a powerful strike, but new PSG coach Laurent Blanc is still without a victory.
“It’s football ... we deserved to win,” Cavani said. “We had so many chances, but we will get better little by little.”
“With a bit of work, we will reach our aims,” he said. “It’s my first goal and moreover it was a good one, but that doesn’t mean anything really if we don’t win at the end. At least it let us believe we could do it.”
NANTES DENIED
Elsewhere, newly promoted Nantes lost 2-1 at Lorient.
Nantes took the lead in the 17th minute in somewhat fortunate circumstances, with Olivier Veigneau’s cross from long range ending up in the far corner of the net.
Lorient leveled five minutes from halftime when Maxime Baca sent a ball through to an unmarked Vincent Aboubakar, who calmly slotted it past goalkeeper Remy Riou.
Jeremie Aliadiere scored the winner with a stunning free-kick that Riou got a hand to, but could not prevent going into the top-left corner.
Nantes were prevented from scoring a stoppage-time equalizer by Lamine Kone’s last-ditch clearance off the line.
After letting another big lead slip with an error-strewn performance at the French Open on Wednesday, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka felt like getting as far away from the courts as possible. “Just want to quit tennis right now,” Sabalenka said after wasting a lead of a set and two breaks in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 loss to Diana Shnaider in the women’s singles quarter-finals. “We’ll see in few days. Hopefully I’ll get back on track mentally.” Sabalenka’s wait for a first French Open title continues despite the four-time major winner leading 4-1 in the second set and being two points from victory while

Liverpool are in advanced talks with former AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as they seek a replacement for Arne Slot, reports said on Tuesday. Iraola has emerged as Liverpool’s top target to replace Slot, who was sacked on Saturday last week after a turbulent second season in charge. Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal in principle to bring the Spaniard, who left Bournemouth at the end of this season, to Anfield. Sporting director Richard Hughes was heavily involved in hiring Iraola during his time at Bournemouth and is again spearheading the recruitment of the highly rated coach. The Reds are
KNICKS TAKE LEAD: San Antonio put on a 9-0 run to be up 95-94 with just over 2 minutes to play, but the rest of the game belonged to the New York Knicks It was past five minutes through the third quarter of Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday and the New York Knicks’ 11-game winning streak was in major jeopardy. The Knicks missed nine of their first 10 shots in the early part of the period and trailed the San Antonio Spurs by 14 points. They were floundering. Then something crazy happened. The Knicks found new life from an unlikely source: The Spurs. New York rallied to tie the game by the end of the period, gave up the lead briefly late in the fourth quarter, and pulled away late for a 105-95
