Taiwanese taekwondo athlete Chuang Chia-chia bagged Taiwan’s first medal at the 2013 World Taekwondo Championships in Mexico on Wednesday, taking silver in the women’s under-67kg event.
Chuang toppled Chilean Patricia Figueroa 18-2 in the first round before defeating London Olympics silver medalist Nur Tatar of Turkey 4-3.
She then beat Azerbaijan’s Farida Azizova, the gold medalist at this year’s European Championships 8-5, before losing to France’s Haby Niare in the final.

After a scoreless first round, France’s Naire earned four points in the second round before eventually claiming the contest 5-4.
Naire advanced to the final round by beating Slovenia’s Franka Anic, the gold medalist at this year’s US Open, 2-0 in a semifinal match.
In the men’s under-68kg final Iran’s Behnam Asbaghikhanghah brushed aside a stiff challenge from South Korea’s Hun Kim to win the gold medal.
The biennial championships, held by the World Taekwondo Federation, are taking place in Puebla, Mexico until Sunday.
