China’s Liu Xiang plans to celebrate his birthday by sending a warning to his Olympic 110m hurdles rivals on his first appearance at the London Grand Prix today.
Liu, a former Olympic champion, is among the leading contenders to win gold at the London Games and he has the perfect opportunity to underline his credentials in the Diamond League meeting at Crystal Palace.
The Chinese star, who leads the world rankings this year with 12.97 seconds, won the Olympic title in Athens in 2004, but left fans devastated when he pulled out of the Beijing Games because of an Achilles injury.

Liu, who turns 29 today, has continued to struggle with injury since Beijing, but he believes he is back to his best after opting for a new stride pattern.
Now, just two weeks before the Games begin, Liu, who also won gold at the 2007 World Championships, hopes to fine-tune his Olympic preparations with victory over outdoor world champion Jason Richardson and world indoor 60m hurdles champion Aries Merritt.
“This will be my last race before the Olympics so I will be looking for a very strong performance. The London Diamond League will be the perfect race for me to complete my preparation,” Liu said.
“I’m really excited to be competing in London for the first time. It’s a great opportunity for me to experience the conditions and atmosphere of the host city just two weeks before the Games,” he added.
After two impressive wins in the Diamond League events in Shanghai and Eugene, Oregon, this year, Liu is hopeful he is on track for success at the Olympics, where his main rival will be Cuban Olympic champion and world-record holder Dayron Robles.
“My form has been good so far this season and my preparation is on target,” Liu said. “The line-up at the London Diamond League is tough and running against world-class athletes in Olympic conditions will be a good test for me.”
“I really enjoy racing in the UK, although I have not had many chances in my career. Hopefully I will have a lot of support from the Chinese community,” he added.
With 16 Olympic and 15 reigning World Champions taking to the track today and tomorrow, there are plenty of intriguing events, but the main highlight will be the 100m clash between injury-prone duo Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell.
The second and third-fastest men of all time are set to take to the track in south London hoping to prove they still have Olympic gold-medal potential despite the dominance of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.
Meanwhile, the clash of the second-fastest woman of all-time, Carmelita Jeter, with new Jamaican record-holder Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce over 100m will be one to watch tomorrow.
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Omar Marmoush’s stunning long-range strike on Tuesday upstaged Kevin de Bruyne on the Manchester City great’s Etihad farewell. Marmoush let fly from about 30m to put City ahead in their 3-1 win against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. The victory moved Pep Guardiola’s team up to third in the standings and left qualification for the UEFA Champions League in their own hands heading into the last round of the season. “It’s really important. To be in the Champions League after what happened [this season] will be really nice,” the City manager said. De Bruyne was making his final home appearance for City before
