A Taiwanese baseball team won the international championship in this year’s Junior League Baseball World Series on Friday by beating Guatemala 10-3.
The team’s victory marked the second time that an Asia-Pacific team has won the league’s international tournament since teams from the region first began participating in the series in 1999. In 2007, a team from the Philippines won the international championship.
As a result of its victory in the league’s international pool, the Chung-Ching club from Taipei will face the champion from the league’s USA pool for the ultimate World Series title on Saturday in Taylor, Michigan.
In the international pool’s final competition, Taiwan led 5-0 through the first three innings, but Guatemala cut the deficit to 5-3 after the 4th inning.
In the 6th inning, Taiwan boosted a five-zero run and pulled away to 10-3 until the end of the match.
Prior to the game, Taiwan had defeated Guatemala (7-2), Ukraine (13-0), Canada (10-0) and Mexico (8-5) for a sweep of the round robin play in the five-team international pool.
