Members of the Asian Rowing Confederation voted this month that next year’s Asian Rowing Championship will be held in Ilan County, the Chinese Taipei Amateur Rowing Association said yesterday.
The championship is held every two years. Last year’s event was held in Chungju City, South Korea, which has announced a bid to host the 2013 World Rowing Championships.
Association chairman Hung Jui-chang (洪瑞昌) told the Taipei Times in a telephone interview on Saturday that the biennial races are scheduled to be held at Ilan’s Dongshan River Water Park next November.
“Ilan has experience hosting international rowing events, such as the International Collegiate Invitational Regatta,” Hung said.
The county suspended the regatta two years ago because the central government had curbed funding for the event.
The championship is also special because the nation also has the right to host the Asian Senior and Junior Rowing championships at the same time, Hung said.
Both Taiwan and Singapore competed for the bid. Members of the Asian Rowing Federation then voted in a meeting in Hong Kong held three weeks ago, where they awarded the right to Taiwan. Prior to the trip to Hong Kong, Hung and association staff visited Ilan County Commissioner Lu Kua-hua (呂國華) in August, expressing their wish to resume the International Collegiate Invitational Regatta next year, as the regatta could serve as a warm-up race for the Asian Rowing Championship.
The association said in the meeting with Lu that the section of the Dongshan River within the Water Park is straight and can be arranged into six waterways for the championship races. The difference in the depth of the water between the flow and ebb was less than a meter, which makes it a qualified venue for international rowing races, it said.
Ilan hosted the seventh Asian Rowing Championship in 1995 — an event also held at Dongshan River Water Park.

Momentum shifted firmly in Zverev’s favor when he won a 52-shot rally in the first set tiebreak and he sealed the win on a double fault by the Australian in the second set. “It was a very
