Senior Australian defender Craig Moore has undergone surgery for testicular cancer and has been ruled out of next week’s World Cup qualifier against Bahrain, Football Federation Australia said yesterday.
The 32-year-old former Rangers and Newcastle United defender had surgery in Brisbane on Tuesday, the FFA said after receiving confirmation from the player’s manager.
The news has rocked the Australian soccer fraternity and disrupted the Australian squad’s preparations for their World Cup qualifier in Manama next Wednesday.
Moore, who returned from international retirement for the Socceroos’ 2010 World Cup qualification campaign, is now under the care of a urologist who told the player yesterday that the “outlook is good,” according to his manager.
Follow-up tests will be carried out in six weeks.
His Australian manager Ian Hanson confirmed the surgery had been a success.
“The outlook is good. In six weeks further testing will be done — but I don’t think we have seen the last of Craig Moore as a player,” he said.
National team coach Pim Verbeek said he was shocked when he heard the news about Moore.
“It’s always a shock to hear of a diagnosis like this, but I am encouraged by the prognosis from the medical practitioner. I speak for the entire team in wishing him a speedy recovery,” the Dutchman said in a FFA statement.
FFA chief executive Ben Buckley said Australia’s whole soccer community wished Moore all the best in his recovery from the operation.
“I am sure that with Craig’s legendary toughness, as well as the best of medical care, his age and his general level of health and fitness that Craig will respond well to treatment,” Buckley said.
Verbeek has had to make a total of three changes to the squad he announced on Monday with FC Nurnberg defender Matthew Spiranovic and Blackburn Rovers midfielder Vince Grella withdrawing through injury.
Verbeek has added three domestic A-League players, defenders Jade North and Mark Milligan and midfielder Mile Jedinak to the squad.
Grella injured a hamstring playing for Blackburn Rovers last weekend while Spiranovic suffered an ankle injury at training on Tuesday.

Retired defender Jerome Boateng on Saturday pulled out of a planned coaching internship at Bayern Munich after fans voiced their objection due to the FIFA 2014 World Cup winner being found guilty of assaulting a former girlfriend last year. The former Bayern and Germany defender, who played for the club between 2011 and 2021, had discussed a short internship with coach Vincent Kompany. “Following the recent discussion regarding myself, I have decided to focus on my issues such as the A training license.... That is where my focus is,” he said in a social media post addressed to Bayern and
