Taiwan’s Chan Yung-jan won her first round women’s singles match at the Ordina Open on Tuesday as defending champion Anna Chakvetadze of Russia defeated Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (1).
Chan, 18, beat her more experienced opponent, 59th-ranked Swede Sofia Arvidsson, 7-5, 7-5.
Chakvetadze next faces eighth-seeded Alona Bondarenko, who beat New Zealand qualifier Marina Erakovic 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach her fifth quarter-final of the year. She has yet to win one.
French Open finalist Dinara Safina, seeded third, fired eight aces past Camille Pin of France to win 6-1, 6-4.
Meanwhile, second-seeded Richard Gasquet was upset by fellow Frenchman Marc Gicquel 7-5, 7-6 (6) in the second round of the men’s event.
Gicquel fended off seven break points to and earned the only break for his first win over Gasquet in three encounters.
His win earned a quarter-final clash with Austria’s Jurgen Melzer, who upset fifth-seeded Igor Andreev of Russia 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
Playing at Ordina for the first time, top-seeded David Ferrer beat Italian qualifier Massimo Dell’acqua 6-2, 7-6 (3) to earn a showdown with two-time Ordina champion Mario Ancic.
Sixth-seeded Ancic beat Steve Darcis of Belgium 6-2, 6-4.
The 24-year-old Croatian has won 12 matches in a row at Den Bosch, but missed last year due to illness.

Chen Ti’s hopes of a place at next week’s Wimbledon championships ended on Tuesday when he was defeated by Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic in the second round of qualifying in Roehampton, London.
Hernych beat the man from Keelung 6-3, 6-1 to leave Lu Yen-hsun as the sole Taiwanese representative in the men’s singles at the All England Championships, which begin next week.
The 2025 International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) Mr Universe Chinese Taipei competition began yesterday at Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, with more than 150 athletes showcasing their physiques.
