In the battle for supremacy in Group A at the women's Asian Cup yesterday, North Korea edged China 1-0 with a goal from Ri Un-gyong in the 34th minute of the match.
In a match-up of the two soccer teams already qualified for the semi-finals, it was the North Koreans who came out on top at the Army Stadium on a damp, cloudy evening in Ho Chi Minh City.
Across the capital at the Thong Nat Stadium, Vietnam took on Thailand in the battle of the two teams without a win in the tournament and it was the hosts who came out on top.
Cheered on by a crowd of 2,500, Vietnam scored the only goal of the game in the second half. Doan Thi Kim Chi got it in the 70th minute to leave Thailand pointless and rooted to the bottom of the table.
On Saturday Australia edged closer to the semi-finals with a 2-0 win over South Korea.
The Australians now need just a point from their final Group B game against Japan today to stay on track to bettering their runner-up finish in the 2006 tournament.
A goal in each half from Ellyse Perry and Lisa De Vanna secured the “Matildas” their second successive victory to put them on top of the group on six points, with Japan and South Korea both on three.
Tom Sermanni’s side took the lead in the 29th minute when Collette McCallum’s free-kick on the edge of the area rebounded back off the wall, only for Perry to fire a 23m drive into the back of the net. Australia failed to capitalize on several more chances before the lively De Vanna got her just reward for tormenting the South Korean defense when she broke free in the 68th minute and coolly dispatched a low shot.
