Henrik Zetterberg broke a tie at 6 minutes, 54 seconds of the third period and added an empty-net goal to lift the Detroit Red Wings over the Nashville Predators 3-1 in the NHL playoffs on Thursday.
Dominik Hasek, playing in his 116th playoff game, made 19 saves for the top-seeded Wings and Dan Ellis stopped 37 shots for the Predators before being pulled with just over a minute left.
Detroit’s Johan Franzen scored in the first period and Nashville’s Jordin Tootoo tied it late in the second.
Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is scheduled for today in Detroit.
Canadiens 4, Bruins 1
In Montreal, Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn scored 1 minute, 28 seconds apart in the opening minutes of their playoff debuts as Montreal remained perfect against Boston this season.
Carey Price also made his playoff debut, stopping 17 shots for Montreal, who finished first overall in the Eastern Conference, in large part thanks to sweeping eight games against the Bruins.
Bryan Smolinski and Tom Kostopoulos were also scorers for the Canadiens.
Bruins goalie Tim Thomas stopped 28 shots in his first playoff game and Shawn Hnidy scored for Boston in the first period.
Montreal will host Game 2 of the best-of-seven series today.
Sharks 2, Flames 0
In San Jose, California, Evgeni Nabokov made 21 saves in his sixth career postseason shutout and rookie Torrey Mitchell scored a power-play goal to even the series.
Joe Pavelski also scored an early goal for the second-seeded Sharks, who outshot the penalty-prone Flames by a huge margin — 43-21 this time — for the second time in 24 hours.
Calgary beat San Jose in the first game on Wednesday night 3-2 despite a 16-shot disadvantage and a home sellout crowd expecting big things from the NHL’s second-best regular season team.
Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 41 shots for the seventh-seeded Calgary Flames, who labored on the penalty-kill for nearly 10 minutes of the second period, in which San Jose outshot Calgary 27-3 — but did not score until Mitchell’s goal in the waning seconds of that power-play time.
Game 3 will be played in Calgary tomorrow.
Stars 4, Ducks 0
In Anaheim, California, Marty Turco earned his fourth career postseason shutout and Dallas scored four power-play goals to take Game 1 against the defending Stanley Cup champions.
Turco made 23 saves, Steve Ott and Loui Eriksson had first-period power-play goals and Jere Lehtinen and Brendan Morrow added power-play scores in the second for the Stars, who have been eliminated in the opening round for each of the past three years.
Morrow also had two assists, as did Mike Ribeiro.
The Ducks’ usual strong suits, their veteran defense and goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, were vulnerable, with Giguere facing 37 shots.
Game 2 is in Anaheim today.
Jobe Bellingham on Tuesday admitted to having “anxieties” on following in brother Jude’s footsteps after joining Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Jobe Bellingham, 19, is two years younger than Jude Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid in 2023 after three years at Dortmund. A centerpiece of the England national team, Jude Bellingham has emerged as one of the best players in the world in recent seasons. The younger Jobe Bellingham joined Dortmund in June from Sunderland after their promotion to the English Premier League. He admitted he understood what the perception would be ahead of the move to Germany. “It’s something you do think about.
Before Tuesday’s 7-2 win at the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy suggested “most people couldn’t tell you five players on our team.” A look at the standings would indicate more Brewers players soon will be recognized by more fans. After all, it is difficult to overlook a team that not only continues to extend their lead in the National League Central, but also boasts the best record in the majors. “What we’re doing in here right now is special,” right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta said after allowing only four hits and one run in five innings, while setting a career high with
A baseball team from New Taipei City won the US Pony Palomino Division World Series yesterday in Laredo, Texas, defeating the US West representative team from Azusa, California, 2-1. Ku-Pao Home Economics and Commercial High School earned the right to represent Taiwan in the Pony Palomino (17 to 18 age group) World Series after winning this year's Wang Chen-chih Cup, a competition named after Taiwanese-Japanese baseball legend Wang Chen-chih (王貞治), also known as Sadaharu Oh. In the championship game against Azusa, Ku-Pao's starting pitcher Luo Yu-yan (羅于晏) was erratic early, giving up two hits in the bottom of the first inning, followed
Taiwanese pitcher Teng Kai-wei took the mound in New York on Saturday as the starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants in his MLB season debut against the New York Mets, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing five runs. The Taiwanese right-hander struggled early, giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, including a three-run homer to Mets slugger Pete Alonso — his 250th career home run. However, Teng was not fazed and soon found his footing, holding the Mets scoreless in the bottom of the second and third innings. Meanwhile, Mets starter Kodai Senga of Japan made a few errors
