In the FA Cup, Manchester United reached their 17th final with a 4-1 win over Watford on Saturday. Wayne Rooney scored two goals and set up another for Cristiano Ronaldo.
At the neutral Villa Park, Rooney scored with an angled shot from 20m to give Man United the lead in the seventh minute.
Hameur Bouazza equalized for Watford in the 26th with a shot deflected in by United defender Gabriel Heinze, but Rooney set up Ronaldo for United's second in the 28th.
Alan Smith then crossed for Rooney to sidefoot in his second goal in the 66th, and Kieran Richardson made it 4-1 in the 82nd.
In the Premier League Arsenal ended a four-match winless streak with a 2-1 victory over Bolton, keeping the Gunners in fourth place.
Tomas Rosicky and Cesc Fabregas scored for Arsenal at the Emirates stadium after Nicolas Anelka's 11th-minute goal for Bolton.
"It is a big step. To lose the game today would have put us in a bad situation," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.
The Gunners could even finish one spot higher -- an unlikely prospect after they lost three games in a row and drew their fourth -- after third-place Liverpool drew 0-0 with Manchester City.
Also on Saturday, it was: Middlesbrough 1, Aston Villa 3; Portsmouth 2, Newcastle 1; Reading 1, Fulham 0; and Sheffield United 3, West Ham 0.
Anelka scored his third goal against his former club this season with a left-footed volley. Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann had pushed the ball toward Anelka when blocking a shot from Kevin Nolan.
Rosicky leveled with a close-range goal in the 31st after Arsenal had pushed hard for an equalizer.
Fabregas scored Arsenal's winner in the 46th minute for his first Premier League goal of the season. Bolton's Ivan Campo was sent off in the 82nd minute after collecting a second yellow card.
Liverpool showed signs of fatigue at Man City after their 1-0 midweek win over PSV Eindhoven to advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second time in three years.
"I am really disappointed with that performance," Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said. "I do not think my players had other things on their minds, we had talked beforehand about making sure we were focused for the league games."
Sheffield United's win over West Ham lifted them out of the relegation zone into 17th place.
Michael Tonge, Phil Jagielka and Jon Stead scored for Sheffield United after the Blades had collected one point from their previous five games. The win also ended West Ham's three-match winning streak.
Fulham are only one point above Wigan and Sheffield United in 15th place after Lawrie Sanchez began his career as the Cottagers manager with a loss.
Chris Coleman was fired as boss on Tuesday and Sanchez will combine the Fulham job with his role as Northern Ireland coach for the final four games of the season.
Reading's Stephen Hunt scored from close range in the 15th minute from a cross by Kevin Doyle.
Portsmouth had goals from Benjani Mwaruwari in the seventh minute and a long-range strike from Matthew Taylor in the 59th. Newcastle's Emre Belozoglu pulled one back in the 69th with a penalty kick.
Aston Villa rallied from a poor start after goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen spilled a free kick from Middlesbrough midfielder Fabio Rochemback into his own net in the 13th minute.
Craig Gardner leveled for Villa in the 45th, and Luke Moore and Stilian Petrov also scored to help lift the club from 14th to 10th.
Brazil has four teams, more than any other country, in the expanded Club World Cup that kicked off yesterday in the US, but for SE Palmeiras, the competition holds a special meaning: winning it would provide some redemption. Under coach Abel Ferreira since 2020, Palmeiras lifted two Copa Libertadores titles, plus Brazilian league, cup and state championships. Even before Ferreira, it boasted another South American crown and 11 league titles. The only major trophy missing is a world champions’ title. Other Brazilian clubs like Fluminense FC and Botafogo FR, also in the tournament, have never won it either, but the problem for Palmeiras
Paris Saint-Germain’s Lee Kang-in has pleaded with South Korea fans to get behind the team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after more boos were aimed at coach Hong Myung-bo despite leading them to qualification. South Korea reached next year’s finals in North America without losing a game, but that does not tell the whole story. The country’s soccer association has been in the firing line, having scrambled about to find a successor after sacking the unpopular Jurgen Klinsmann in February last year. They eventually settled on Hong, the decorated former skipper who had an unsuccessful stint as coach in 2013-2014, during which
Lionel Messi drew vast crowds and showed flashes of his brilliance when his Inter Miami side were held to a goalless draw by African giants Al-Ahly as the revamped FIFA Club World Cup got off to a festive start on Saturday. Fans showed up en masse for the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, but Messi could not fully deliver, his best chance coming through a last-second attempt that was deflected onto the crossbar. Inter Miami next face FC Porto on Thursday in Atlanta, while Al-Ahly, who benefited from raucous, massive support, are to
Ferrari’s F1 fortunes might be flagging, but the Italian team start this weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans as favorites, targeting a third consecutive triumph in motorsport’s fabled endurance classic. Roger Federer is acting as celebrity starter with the tennis icon getting the 93rd edition of the jewel in four-wheeled endurance racing’s crown under way tomorrow. Twenty-four hours later, through daylight, darkness and dawn, the 21 elite hypercars are to battle it out over 300 laps (more than 4,000km) in front of a sold-out 320,000 crowd burning the midnight oil with copious quantities of coffee and beer. Ferrari made a triumphant return after
