Tseng Jau-hao pitched 6-1/3 solid innings of one-run ball to help lead the Chinatrust Whales beat the La New Bears 5-3 in Sinjhuang Saturday for their first win in 10 games.
The third-year righty out of the National Chiayi University beat the league-leading Bears for the second time this season by allowing a run on six hits, giving his club the much-needed win that stopped the Whales' recent free fall at a record-tying nine straight. The last time that the marine creatures savored the taste of victory was on May 13th, when they topped the Macoto Cobras in a 7-3 decision.
The game began with the Bears drawing first blood by breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when outfielder Lu Jung-hsiung doubled off Tseng and scored on an RBI single by second baseman Shih Chih-wei to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Then came a rare offensive explosion by the Whales that scored five runs off Bears staff ace Kenny Rayborn of the US over the next two innings to take a 5-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Five consecutive singles by the Whales rang up three runs against Rayborn in the bottom of the fifth before the former major leaguer was ejected one batter into the sixth for hitting a man in the head on a wild pitch.
The Whales ended up scoring a pair of runs in the inning that proved to be the difference in the game as the Bears fight back by plating a run in the eighth on Canadian slugger Todd Betts' RBI double and newcomer Midre Cummings' solo homer off Whales closer Dario Veras in the ninth that made it 5-3.
Rayborn missed the chance to become the league's first eight-win man as he dropped to 7-2 for the year. Both of his losses had come at the hands of Tseng.
Lions 5, Elephants 0
The President Lions tied their team record for longest winning streak at nine straight with a 5-0 victory over the Brother Elephants in Tienmu.
Canadian southpaw Eric Cyr went eight magnificent innings for the big cats to improve to 6-2 for the year by allowing five scattered singles and a double before reliever Lin Yueh-pin tossed a perfect ninth to keep the shutout win intact.
Cyr shook off some bad memories from the last time he pitched in Tienmu when he was pounded hard by the Cobras on May 7th in a 9-1 loss, and kept the Elephants hitters off balanced throughout the game.
Offensively for the Lions, first baseman Kao Guo-ching's 3-for-5 night with two doubles and an RBI led an attack that strung up 11 hits against four different Elephants hurlers in a game that never seemed close.
Leadoff man Yang Seng and outfielder Kuo Dai-chi also chipped in a pair of hits each to help the Lions in their winning cause.
As for the Elephants, All-Star slugger Peng "Chia Chia" Cheng-min's 2-for-4 hitting was the lone highlight of the game in which they batted a lousy 0-for-6 with men in scoring position, including two deadly double plays.
Yu Yao-hsing on Tuesday nabbed Taiwan’s only goal in the final round of qualifiers for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, as they fell 3-1 to Sri Lanka at Taipei Municipal Stadium. Early goals from Sri Lanka in the first half left Taiwan struggling to get on the board, and Christopher Tiao’s own goal at 53 minutes sealed the team’s fate in the third round of qualifiers. While acknowledging that the defeat, Taiwan’s sixth in Group D, was disappointing, head coach Matt Ross said he saw reasons to stay positive about the team’s development. “There were lots of positive signs in terms of the
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli yesterday vowed to “keep raising the bar” after winning the Japanese Grand Prix to become the youngest driver in Formula One history to lead the championship standings. The 19-year-old Italian took advantage of a mid-race safety car to jump into the lead after a dreadful start from pole position, crossing the line ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Antonelli’s Suzuka victory came two weeks after the first grand prix win of his career in China, and sent him top of the championship standings after three races, nine points ahead of team-mate George Russell.
