There is also a huge aquarium at the market. Officials said that the 23m-long aquarium has more than 200 kinds of fish and is the longest aquarium in Asia.
On the second floor of the market there is a seafood cooking classroom to educate the public, chefs, and seafood buyers in cooking techniques. Free cooking recipes are available at the cooking classes.
The market can also prepare and cook fresh catches for the customers right way, with only a NT$50 to NT$100 service charge per dish.
According to the market administration, the fish are shipped directly to the market, and all fish products are fresh and affordable.
"The fish products are all government approved," officials said. "All shoppers can enjoy the quality, freshness and variety here."
A customer yesterday said that he usually spent at least NT$400 when buying a lobster in a traditional market. However, he only spent NT$300 yesterday at the Taipei Fish Market.
According to the executive of the fish market, Chen Chen-kun (
"For example," Chen said, "a fresh crab might cost NT$400 in a traditional market, but it only costs NT$300 to NT$350 here." The average selling price for a crab at a local seafood outlet near a port is about NT$200.
According to market administrators, the city first established the Mintzu Fish Market (
To makeover the traditional market into a modern fish market, as well as to promote fish products, the market administration has worked with the Executive Yuan's Council of Agriculture and the Aquaculture Development Association of the ROC to establish the Taipei Fish Market.
The market administration said that the new market is a perfect meeting place for the fishing industry and consumers, where each morning the freshest seafood sales take place.
"The Taipei Fish Market is a great place," Chen said, "Come see for yourself!"
Responding to the fish market's challenge, Taiwan's traditional markets near the coast said they would continue to offer low prices.
Seafood havens like Fuchi (富基), Pisha (碧砂), Wuchi (梧棲) and Kaohsiung Harbor (高雄港), Taiwan's biggest fishing harbor, have become popular tourist spots.

DEMOGRAPHICS: Robotics is the most promising answer to looming labor woes, the long-term care system and national contingency response, an official said Taiwan is to launch a five-year plan to boost the robotics industry in a bid to address labor shortages stemming from a declining and aging population, the Executive Yuan said yesterday. The government approved the initiative, dubbed the Smart Robotics Industry Promotion Plan, via executive order, senior officials told a post-Cabinet meeting news conference in Taipei. Taiwan’s population decline would strain the economy and the nation’s ability to care for vulnerable and elderly people, said Peter Hong (洪樂文), who heads the National Science and Technology Council’s (NSTC) Department of Engineering and Technologies. Projections show that the proportion of Taiwanese 65 or older would
The government is considering polices to increase rental subsidies for people living in social housing who get married and have children, Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) said yesterday. During an interview with the Plain Law Movement (法律白話文) podcast, Cho said that housing prices cannot be brought down overnight without affecting banks and mortgages. Therefore, the government is focusing on providing more aid for young people by taking 3 to 5 percent of urban renewal projects and zone expropriations and using that land for social housing, he said. Single people living in social housing who get married and become parents could obtain 50 percent more
Democracies must remain united in the face of a shifting geopolitical landscape, former president Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) told the Copenhagen Democracy Summit on Tuesday, while emphasizing the importance of Taiwan’s security to the world. “Taiwan’s security is essential to regional stability and to defending democratic values amid mounting authoritarianism,” Tsai said at the annual forum in the Danish capital. Noting a “new geopolitical landscape” in which global trade and security face “uncertainty and unpredictability,” Tsai said that democracies must remain united and be more committed to building up resilience together in the face of challenges. Resilience “allows us to absorb shocks, adapt under
