Kaohsiung City's Department of Environmental Protection has fined the Chienchen Tank Terminal NT$1 million for a gas leak Tuesday night that occurred when the company was unloading chemical products at Kaohsiung Harbor.

The Chienchen Tank Terminal, which is owned by Lee Chang Yung Chemical Industry Corp, was unloading chemical products from the Stolt Sakura, a Liberia-registered freighter, at pier No. 56 when the accident occurred.

The leak left more than 2,000 area residents feeling ill, with symptoms including headaches, sore throats and vomiting.
Most of those affected were treated by area hospitals and released.
According to Kaohsiung's health department, just two hospital patients have been held for further treatment.
A large number of those who sought treatment yesterday morning did so because of undue worries over the gas leak.

Meanwhile, the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors' Office has begun an investigation to determine who is responsible for the accident.
