Australia has passed a landmark law banning children under 16 from using social media. With the aim of protecting minors from the mental health risks associated with social media use, the ban applies to social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit, while YouTube remains unaffected.

Its passage comes after several Australian teenagers died by suicide over what their families said was cyberbullying. A YouGov poll revealed that 77 percent of Australians support the ban. People in favor of the ban expressed concerns about internet harassment and exposure to harmful content. However, critics warn that this law could lead teenagers to less-monitored environments such as gaming platforms, online forums, or encrypted messaging applications, which may pose new and unexpected risks.
