People are fascinated by places that were once lively but later became abandoned. These places, often called ghost towns, possess a strange beauty that invites people to piece together the scattered clues of past stories. One of the most intriguing can be found in Kolmanskop, Namibia. Sand has invaded every corner of the abandoned buildings of Kolmanskop and is gradually swallowing them whole.
Located in the Namib Desert in southern Africa, Kolmanskop used to be a fancy town in the middle of a dry, endless desert. This place sprung up rapidly after the discovery of diamonds in 1908. As news of the amazing find spread, people flocked to the area to seek their fortunes. Soon, it became a dynamic town that contributed a significant share of the world’s diamond production. Kolmanskop boasted the first X-ray station in the southern hemisphere. It even had the first tram, a type of train that traveled on tracks along public streets, in Africa.
However, the boom in diamond production around Kolmanskop was short-lived. A series of events led to the town’s fall and eventual collapse. In the late 1920s, a much larger diamond field was found south of Kolmanskop. In addition, fewer and fewer diamonds were being found in the area. As a result, by 1956, the town was completely abandoned.

Kolmanskop wasn’t ready to fade into the sands, though. The De Beers mining company opened a museum there in 1980 to preserve the town’s history. Moreover, a private company has been offering tours to Kolmanskop since 2002. Tourists can see old buildings in various states of ruin as the sand creeps in and invades the structures. Though the diamonds are gone, Kolmanskop’s magic lives on, with its history drawing curious souls to its dusty streets.

Like people in many other countries, Taiwanese are fond of delicious fried snacks. For example, Spain is known for its churros, and in Taiwan there is a traditional fried dessert made of sticky rice called beh teung guai. The snack consists of sticky rice flour that is mixed with water, kneaded into a dough and shaped into small pieces. Once fried, the sticky rice balls are coated in crushed peanuts and sugar mixture. knead (v.) Beh teung guai is a traditional snack that has been enjoyed by many senior citizens since

You might have seen athletes gracefully bending and leaping in rhythm with melodies. This is “rhythmic gymnastics,” a sport often mistaken for artistic gymnastics. However, the two are distinct in focus and presentation. Artistic gymnastics focuses on strength, flexibility, and balance, with athletes performing solo on various equipment. They are scored based on the difficulty of their movements, their execution of certain skills on each apparatus, and their ability to combine multiple skills into different movements. Rhythmic gymnastics, on the other hand, emphasizes style and presentation, with athletes often performing in teams. Moving in harmony with music, they use
