During the extreme cold snap at the beginning of this year, New Taipei City’s tea production area experienced a rare instance of heavy snowfall, which has produced a unique limited springtime variety of “snow baozhong tea” with a light, fragrant aroma and sweet taste. The tea is expected to hit the market on June 9.
A local tea grower says he has no recollection of it ever having snowed before in New Taipei City’s Pinglin District. However, when he was young he does remember his elders talking of snow, although he never saw it with his own eyes. This year, tea growers gasped in amazement on seeing the extraordinary sight of entire tea plantations blanketed in over 10 centimeters of white snow. Visiting tourists were also extremely excited to see the once-in-a-century event and enjoyed themselves so much that they were reluctant to leave.
The 2016 New Taipei City Good Tea event will be held at the Pinglin Junior High School exercise ground from June 9 to 12. Activities will include an ecological hike, picnic, a tea production taster camp, wacky challenge games, classical music, a performance by the If... Children’s Theatre Troupe, DIY activities and more.
