  Hoping for a nicer figure, a young woman of around 19 years old only ate vegetables and cookies every day, drinking only water. Within 2 months she succeeded in losing 10 kgs, but her period also stopped for four months, her hair started falling out, she started growing hair on her breasts and she found it difficult to sleep, all because of the resultant hormonal imbalance in her body. Doctors say that if you want to lose weight you should have a diet appropriate for your physical constitution, instead of putting yourself through the wringer.

  In Chinese medicine, there are five types of physical constitution susceptible to weight gain. These include the “stomach-heat” type, where people have big appetites, always feel hungry, and are partial to spicy, fried, oily foods, and who are prone to putting on weight around the waist; the “spleen-gastric deficiency” type, where people have poor appetites yet still put weight on easily, who often feel exhausted and sluggish, and who like to eat cold foods and have a sweet tooth, most of whom will put on weight on the lower half of their body; the “stagnation of liver qi” type, in which people find relief from anxiety by gorging themselves or going to a lot of dinner parties; the “qi and blood deficiency” type, in which people eat sparingly and do a lot of exercise, but find it difficult to lose weight regardless and who have a slow metabolism, who often put on weight over the entire body; and the “liver and kidney deficiency” type, brought on either by staying up all night over a long period of time or by the menopause.(Liberty times, translated by Paul Cooper)

  為了追求窈窕身材，一名年約十九歲的妙齡少女，每天只吃青菜、餅乾與喝水度日，兩個月成功瘦下十公斤，但也造成月經四個月沒報到，並出現掉髮、胸前長滿毛、睡眠不佳等荷爾蒙失調情況。醫師提醒，只要體質搭配正確飲食就可以健康減重，不必吃盡苦頭！

  

  Doctors’ advice is that people with different constitutions suit different types of food, and people need to eat properly if they want to diet in a healthy way. 醫師建議，不同體質各有合適食物，吃對了, 才能健康瘦。

  中醫定義易胖體質可分為五大類型，包含食量大、容易肚子餓、偏愛辛辣炸烤或油膩食物的「胃熱型」，屬於中廣型肥胖；食慾差卻發胖、容易疲倦懶散、常吃冰品甜食的「脾虛寒濕型」，多為下半身肥胖；大吃紓壓或經常應酬的「肝鬱氣滯型」；少吃多動仍瘦不下來、代謝不佳的「氣血虛弱型」，常見全身肥胖；以及長期熬夜或更年期所致的「肝腎兩虛型」。
