A daring highway robbery committed by a herd of elephants may finally prompt authorities to close a road that cuts through one of Thailand's wildlife sanctuaries, at least to night traffic.
"There have been many accidents on this road, leading to the deaths of thousands of animals, but this was the first highway robbery by elephants we've recorded," said Yoo Senatham, chief of the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary in Chachoengsao province, 100km east of Bangkok.
On January 6, at 9pm, a herd of 11 elephants blocked a convoy of trucks travelling on Route 3259 that cuts through the sanctuary and proceeded to rob the vehicles of their loads of sugarcane and tapioca, said Yoo in a telephone interview.

"Park officials were sent to the spot to scare the elephants away but the animals were very aggressive and didn't want to leave the loot," said Yoo.
There are an estimated 180 wild elephants in the 103,000-hectare sanctuary.
Over the past five years three people and 14,408 wild animals have died in car accidents on Route 3259, with most of the accidents occurring at night.
Yoo, who has been lobbying authorities to close the road to night traffic for years, said the closure might be the only way to avoid more elephant highway robberies.
"These elephants are getting very aggressive, so I have suggested that the safest thing to do is close the road at night," he said. (DPA)

ˇ What do you think of the movie? χ How do you like the movie? χ How do you think of the movie? 註︰What do you think of = What is your opinion of。 think 的受詞是 what,不能用 how。 2. ˇ Which singer do you think is the best? χ Do you think which singer is the best? 註︰英語中 which singer 似乎是 do you think 的受詞,實則 do you think 是插入語,其他例子如下: 你以為他喜歡誰? Who do you think he likes? Where do you think I live? Whom/Who do you think I met in the park yesterday? 3. ˇ No matter where he goes, he
