Super Slipper Part 3 (「超犀利趴-團團團團團」演唱會) will play Taipei Arena (台北小巨蛋) on August 25 and 26. The five headlining bands include Luantan A-hsiang (亂彈阿翔), The Chairman (董事長), Backquarter (四分衛), Tolaku (脫拉庫) and the hugely popular Mayday (五月天).
“[These] five bands jumpstarted Taiwan’s band era,” said Chen Yung-chih (陳勇志), chairman of B’in Music (相信音樂), which organized the event.
Back in 2000, the Golden Melody Awards (金曲獎), billed as the most important award in the Chinese-language music world, had yet to define Best Band as its own separate category. In that year, the five above-mentioned bands were nominated in the Best Duo category, which Luantan A-hsiang won. While accepting the award, the group’s vocalist, A-hsiang, proclaimed, “the era of bands has arrived!”

A-hsiang’s words were a wake-up call for Golden Melody organizers, who went on to add a Best Band category the following year; Mayday took the top honor.
Fast-forward to 2010 and the five bands came together for the first incarnation of Super Slipper at the Taipei Arena. The next year, they played to 50,000 jubilant fans at the Kaohsiung World Games Stadium.
Chen said that although most of the musicians have married and grown a little older, they are still ready to rock.

“They haven’t mellowed but rather aged into mature men who believe in rock,” Chen said
Mayday has become the most commercially successful rock band in Taiwan. The group has released eight albums and won the Best Band award four times at the Golden Melody Awards, which it also swept this year with six trophies for the album Nowhere (諾亞方舟).
A-hsiang, the frontman of Luantan A-hsiang, has gone on to a successful solo career by winning the Best Movie Theme Song award with Perfect Landing (完美落地) in 2011, and the Best Mandarin Male Singer award with the album Me in Place of You (把我換成你) at Golden Melody this year.

The Chairman and Backquarter have held true to their indie roots while Tolaku has disbanded. However, all members of the five bands will take the stage for Super Slipper Part 3.
“Rock is a journey of no return,”said Mayday’s band leader Guai Shuo (怪獸).
Mayday will open the show while Tolaku will perform the finale set. Audiences are invited to attend the show by wearing flip-flops according to its tradition.

“We believe rock can change the world,” Chen said.
On April 26, The Lancet published a letter from two doctors at Taichung-based China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) warning that “Taiwan’s Health Care System is on the Brink of Collapse.” The authors said that “Years of policy inaction and mismanagement of resources have led to the National Health Insurance system operating under unsustainable conditions.” The pushback was immediate. Errors in the paper were quickly identified and publicized, to discredit the authors (the hospital apologized). CNA reported that CMUH said the letter described Taiwan in 2021 as having 62 nurses per 10,000 people, when the correct number was 78 nurses per 10,000
As we live longer, our risk of cognitive impairment is increasing. How can we delay the onset of symptoms? Do we have to give up every indulgence or can small changes make a difference? We asked neurologists for tips on how to keep our brains healthy for life. TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH “All of the sensible things that apply to bodily health apply to brain health,” says Suzanne O’Sullivan, a consultant in neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, and the author of The Age of Diagnosis. “When you’re 20, you can get away with absolute
When the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese forces 50 years ago this week, it prompted a mass exodus of some 2 million people — hundreds of thousands fleeing perilously on small boats across open water to escape the communist regime. Many ultimately settled in Southern California’s Orange County in an area now known as “Little Saigon,” not far from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, where the first refugees were airlifted upon reaching the US. The diaspora now also has significant populations in Virginia, Texas and Washington state, as well as in countries including France and Australia.
May 5 to May 11 What started out as friction between Taiwanese students at Taichung First High School and a Japanese head cook escalated dramatically over the first two weeks of May 1927. It began on April 30 when the cook’s wife knew that lotus starch used in that night’s dinner had rat feces in it, but failed to inform staff until the meal was already prepared. The students believed that her silence was intentional, and filed a complaint. The school’s Japanese administrators sided with the cook’s family, dismissing the students as troublemakers and clamping down on their freedoms — with
