Taiwan’s technical consumer goods market registered a marginal fall of 0.9 percent year-on-year with NT$47.5 billion (US$1.44 billion) in the second quarter of this year, according to German market research firm GfK Group.
The telecommunications and domestic appliances sectors recorded strong double-digit growth of 22.8 percent and 16.6 percent respectively, thanks to improved performance in the mobile handset, air treatment, hot beverage and dental care segments, GfK said in a report on Wednesday last week.
Those figures canceled out declines in four other sectors — information technology, photography, office equipment and consumables, and consumer electronics — which contracted by between 10.8 percent and 20.4 percent from April to June, compared with the same period a year earlier.
The domestic appliances sector fell by only 0.2 percent.
Telecommunications accounted for the biggest share of Taiwan’s technical consumer goods market in the second quarter, with a revenue of NT$15.3 billion, followed by the information technology sector with NT$12.9 billion and the major domestic appliances sector with NT$6.1 billion, GfK figures showed.

China yesterday announced anti-dumping duties as high as 74.9 percent on imports of polyoxymethylene (POM) copolymers, a type of engineering plastic, from Taiwan, the US, the EU and Japan.
