A famous restaurant chain known for its specialty of braised pork rice yesterday announced it was retracting its recent price hikes on staple dishes, after the move triggered public complaints.
Formosa Chang (鬍鬚張) said it would immediately return to its original prices, local cable TV network UBN yesterday quoted chairman Chang Yung-chang (張永昌) as telling a press conference.
Formosa Chang announced on Sept. 16 it was raising prices of its braised pork rice and chicken on rice dishes from NT$64 to NT$68 for a big bowl, NT$49 to NT$52 for a medium bowl and NT$33 to NT$35 for a small bowl. It also increased prices for plain rice by NT$1 to NT$2 on different sizes of bowls.
It said the hikes were made to reflect higher costs. However, its move drew consumer complaints since the consumer price index rose to a four-year high in August.
The complaints prompted Chang and company executives to make a public apology yesterday, UBN reported.
The company is not only rolling back its prices, but it is also offering special packages at the end of this month, Chang said.
To ease potential inflationary pressure, the government this week decided to cut tariffs on imported fruit for two months to lower retail prices and instructed the state-run refiner CPC Corp, Taiwan (台灣中油) to make no price change for domestic liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas this month.
