Hurricane Earl lashed the northern Leeward Islands with heavy rain and strong winds yesterday after strengthening into a Category 2 storm. Hotels were shut overnight as tourists sought shelter inside their rooms.
The US National Hurricane Center in Miami said Earl could become a major hurricane during the day, probably while north of Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands.
Heavy rain began falling late on Sunday on several islands including Antigua, where the Grand Pineapple Beach Resort battened down early as a precaution.

Winds were heavy but had not caused any major damage and the surf was higher than normal but not punishing, general manager Courtney Miller said.
Earlier on Sunday, islanders stocked up on food, water and supplies, set up shelters and tied down boats in harbors across the northern Caribbean as Earl blew toward the region.
Antigua’s V.C. Bird International Airport closed, and regional airlines LIAT and Winair suspended flights. Cruise ships diverted to other ports in the Caribbean and Mexico to avoid the storm’s path.
In St Kitts and Nevis, authorities urged people to take all necessary precautions for the hurricane, which is dwarfing the tiny island nations and territories of the northern Caribbean.
“We really don’t want any loss of life, whether by persons who are careless or by security or emergency persons trying to rescue people,” said Carl Herbert, head of the local emergency management agency.
Hardware stores did a brisk business in plywood and boards as jittery residents and employees of gleaming tourist hotels prepared to safeguard windows and doors.
“We haven’t been hit for quite a few years, but you may never know — this might be the time,” said Ashley Benta, from the Antiguan town of Gray’s Farm.
Late on Sunday, Earl was about 80km east-northeast of Barbuda and headed west-northwest at 24kph, according to the center in Miami. Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 75km from its center.
Earl became a hurricane on Sunday morning and has continued to grow rapidly in strength, fueled by warm ocean temperatures of 30°C.
The center expected Earl would become a major hurricane — meaning Category 3 or higher, with sustained winds topping 178kph — by late yesterday.
Earl could bring battering waves and storm surges of up to 1.2m above normal on some islands, as well as downpours that threaten to unleash flash floods and mudslides.
Forecasters say there is a chance the hurricane could brush the US Mid-Atlantic region toward the end of the week, with its closest approach to North Carolina on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Category 1 Hurricane Danielle was bringing dangerous rip currents to the US East Coast, though it was gradually weakening as it headed over the open Atlantic northeast of the British territory of Bermuda.
Le Tuan Binh keeps his Moroccan soldier father’s tombstone at his village home north of Hanoi, a treasured reminder of a man whose community in Vietnam has been largely forgotten. Mzid Ben Ali, or “Mohammed” as Binh calls him, was one of tens of thousands of North Africans who served in the French army as it battled to maintain its colonial rule of Indochina. He fought for France against the Viet Minh independence movement in the 1950s, before leaving the military — as either a defector or a captive — and making a life for himself in Vietnam. “It’s very emotional for me,”
The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) Central Committee is to gather in July for a key meeting known as a plenum, the third since the body of elite decisionmakers was elected in 2022, focusing on reforms amid “challenges” at home and complexities broad. Plenums are important events on China’s political calendar that require the attendance of all of the Central Committee, comprising 205 members and 171 alternate members with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) at the helm. The Central Committee typically holds seven plenums between party congresses, which are held once every five years. The current central committee members were elected at the
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his pledge to replace India’s religion-based marriage and inheritance laws with a uniform civil code if he returns to office for a third term, a move that some minority groups have opposed. In an interview with the Times of India listing his agenda, Modi said his government would push for making the code a reality. “It is clear that separate laws for communities are detrimental to the health of society,” he said in the interview published yesterday. “We cannot be a nation where one community is progressing with the support of the Constitution while the other
CODIFYING DISCRIMINATION: Transgender people would be sentenced to three years in prison, while same-sex relations could land a person in jail for more than a decade Iraq’s parliament on Saturday passed a bill criminalizing same-sex relations, which would receive a sentence of up to 15 years in prison, in a move rights groups condemned as an “attack on human rights.” Transgender people would be sentenced to three years’ jail under the amendments to a 1988 anti-prostitution law, which were adopted during a session attended by 170 of 329 lawmakers. A previous draft had proposed capital punishment for same-sex relations, in what campaigners had called a “dangerous” escalation. The new amendments enable courts to sentence people engaging in same-sex relations to 10 to 15 years in prison, according to the
