Mexican officials arrest 24 police officers for graft

Federal authorities announced the arrest of 34 police officers suspected of corruption, along with 17 drug traffickers, in two major anti-drug operations in Sinaloa and Tabasco states.

Two landing strips used by the cartels were also destroyed, statements from the Ministry of Defense and the Attorney General’s office said late on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Milenio newspaper said that last month was the bloodiest month since Mexican President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006.

Milenio said 854 people were killed in violence associated with organized crime last month alone. Between January and last month 4,300 people were killed in drug-related violence, compared to 2,651 killed in the same period last year, it said.
