State-run firms: Stand-in chief sought

STAFF WRITER, WITH AGENCIES

The government will appoint a board member of China Shipbuilding Corp (中船) to lead the state-run company by the end of June, after both its chairman and president offered to resign earlier this week, Lu Chi-cheng (呂桔誠), vice chairman of the Commission of National Corporations said yesterday. Lu said the commission has contacted several possible candidates for the caretaker role but will not make its final decision until after Minister Lin Yi-fu (林義夫) returns to Taiwan on June 26. Lin is on a one-week tour of Europe to help drum up foreign investment for Taiwan. According to local media, two China Shipbuilding board members -- Hsu Chiang (徐強), an industry management professor at National Cheng Kung University, and Pan Tin-bai (潘丁白), former director-general of the Export Processing Zone Administration -- are widely speculated to be the most likely candidates to take the position.
