The government is to organize a delegation to visit the US next month to purchase agricultural products and discuss agricultural issues with US officials and representatives of agricultural exporters, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said on Thursday.
The delegation is scheduled to sign a letter of intent on procurement of agricultural products with representatives of US agricultural exporters during the Sept. 13 to Sept. 24 visit, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department of North American Affairs Director-General Christine Hsueh (薛美瑜) said at a news briefing.
The delegation is to first visit Washington and sign a letter of intent at Capitol Hill, before separating into two groups to visit different states in central and western regions of the US that are major agricultural producers, Hsueh said.
One of the groups is to focus on the procurement of corn and soybeans, and is scheduled to visit Iowa, Minnesota and Kentucky, she said, adding that the other group would focus on wheat products and is scheduled to visit Kansas, Montana and Washington.
During the visit, the delegation is to meet with US administration officials and US representatives, as well as call on officials in state governments to exchange views on agricultural issues, Hsueh said.
Taiwan is the seventh-largest export market for US agricultural products, she added, saying that the government organizes agricultural delegations to the US on a regular basis in an effort to promote bilateral trade ties.
Next month’s visit is to be the 10th time Taiwan has organized an agricultural delegation to visit the US since 1998, according to the ministry.
