Two students from Fu Jen Catholic University in New Taipei City (新北市) cheered their way to a gold medal in the Freestyle Pom Doubles at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World University Cheerleading Championship, which wrapped up on Sunday in Florida.
Physical Education students Tu Chia-ni and Hu Ting-yun (胡庭芸) — both seniors — became the first Taiwanese to win the gold in the three-day competition at Walt Disney World Resort, according to Fu Jen Catholic University.
However, Fu Jen University said it is not content to rest on its laurels.

The dance division under the school’s Department of Physical Education said it is planning two performances on March 26 in the hopes of raising NT$1 million (US$33,205), ahead of the team’s trip to compete in the 2014 ICU World Cheerleading Championships, also at Walt Disney World Resort, in April.

The Coast Guard Administration (CGA) yesterday said it had deployed patrol vessels to expel a China Coast Guard ship and a Chinese fishing boat near Pratas Island (Dongsha Island, 東沙群島) in the South China Sea. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, would pose a steep challenge to Taiwan’s ability to defend itself against a full-scale invasion, a defense expert said yesterday.
