Four Taiwanese high school students won one gold and three silver medals on Saturday at the 24th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in Bern, Switzerland.

The Ministry of Education yesterday said the four were among 241 students from 62 nations taking part in the competition and had achieved a world ranking of No. 7.

Lin Pien-cheng (林品呈), a sophomore from Taichung First Senior High School won the gold, while the three silver medals were won by Hsu Chia-an (許家安), a senior from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, Chang Meng-sung (張孟淞), a senior from National Tainan First Senior High School and Lin Hsin-ying (林昕穎), a senior from National Hualien Girls’ Senior High School.

The quartet was selected through a four-stage elimination process from a total of 6,618 students from across the nation.

Trained by David Chao (趙大衛) of National Sun Yat-sen University’s biology department and more than a dozen other professors, the four received their medals at yesterday’s closing ceremony.

Taiwan has a good record at the IBO since it first started competing in 1999, with delegations consistently earning high overall international rankings ranging from world No. 1 to world No. 8 and earning a total of 38 golds, 19 silvers and three bronze medals.
