Foreign ministry thanks Republicans for their support

Staff writer, with CNA

Taiwan has expressed gratitude to the US Republican Party for its support, which is highlighted in the party’s election platform, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.

In the statement outlining the Republican Party’s principles and ideals, only a few countries were specifically mentioned, including Taiwan, China and South Korea. In the section on Taiwan, the party mentioned Taiwan’s political and economic development.

“We salute the people of Taiwan, a sound democracy and economic model for mainland China,” the party said.

Washington-Taipei relations “must continue to be based upon the provisions of the Taiwan Relations Act” as part of efforts to help Taiwan defend itself against China, it said.

The party said it opposes “any unilateral steps by either side to alter the status quo in the Taiwan Straits” on the principle that issues related to Taiwan’s future must be resolved peacefully and be agreeable to the people of Taiwan. The platform also recognized the steps taken by China and Taiwan in recent years to ease tensions and strengthen economic ties.

The ministry said it was grateful for the “strong support” for Taiwan shown by the Republican Party.

Over the past few years, mutual trust between Taiwan and the US has been growing, the ministry said, adding: “This sufficiently represents the US’ support, across party lines, for Taiwan.”

The platform was passed on Tuesday during the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.
