Statistics from the Directorate-General of Highways (DGH) show it has received more than 10,000 applications for road excavation projects since last year, with the excavated areas equating to 212 soccer stadiums.

The highway authority is in charge of regulating 6,833km of roads nationwide, including 4,856km of provincial highways and 1,977km of county highways. In its report to the legislature’s Transportation Committee yesterday, the DGH said a total of 10,343 applications for road excavation projects were filed from January last year to June this year.

On average, 19 applications were filed per day during that period.

The distance of the excavated roads was 586.8km, which is almost equal to the length of Provincial Highway No. 1.

Excavated areas, meanwhile, surpassed 1.51 million square meters.

On average, 132 road excavation projects were in progress each day, the report showed.

Astonished by the statistics, lawmakers on the Committee asked Public Construction Commission Minister Lee Hong-yuan (李鴻源) to reduce the amount of excavation work by coordinating with public utility agencies and asking them to share information.
