Three Taipei County police officers could be charged with forgery and destruction of evidence after allegedly interfering with a report on the suicide of a fellow officer to avoid exposing their role in the matter.
Officer Chuang Chih-chiang (莊志強) of Taipei County Police Department’s Lujhou Police Precinct shot himself on May 26 in the police station’s parking lot. Chuang also slightly wounded his supervisor, Chen Hsiu-cheng (陳修呈).
Banciao prosecutors said an initial report by the police precinct revealed that Chuang was unhappy with Chen, as the latter suspected Chuang of using drugs and had forced him to take a urine test.
The report said that Chuang and Chen had a fight over the urine test in the parking lot. Chuang then pulled out his pistol and shot his supervisor before shooting himself in the head.
Prosecutors said that Lujhou Police Precinct Chief Chang Mang-ling (張夢麟), chief of the precinct’s Inspection Division, Chang Ching-fang (張清峰) and Chen allegedly chose to scrap the initial report and write a new one.
Prosecutors said the new report, which was delivered to the Taipei County Police Department, said Chuang committed suicide because his father had recently passed away, his daughter had cancer and he could not stand the pressure of a troubled relationship with his wife.
The report said Chen was injured while attempting to prevent Chuang from shooting himself.
Prosecutors said the Taipei County Police Department sent the trio to prosecutors for further investigation after the bureau interviewed them and uncovered signs of forgery and destruction of evidence.
Chuang’s brother told reporters yesterday that his family had asked the police authorities to restore Chuang Chih-chiang’s reputation.
