A large haul of birds, including the highly prized laughingthrush — Garrulax canorus — were seized and destroyed on the outlying island of Kinmen yesterday in accordance with quarantine regulations, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said.
Kinmen coast guard radar spotted a motorized sampan out of Dadeng Island (大嶝島), off China’s Xiamen City, and intercepted the vessel after it entered Yangshan Bay in northern Kinmen, the CGA’s Kinmen Coastal Patrol Office said.
The two fishermen aboard the sampan, later identified as Zhang Qingchun and Zhang Lingyi, threw 10 cages of birds into the sea before trying to flee.
Officials from the Council of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine counted the smuggled birds and found 25 laughingthrush, 487 Japanese white-eyes and 163 scaly-breasted munia. Half of them had already drowned.
After collecting samples from the birds, the quarantine officials euthanized them because China is a bird flu-affected country.

Nipah virus infection is to be officially listed as a category 5 notifiable infectious disease in Taiwan in March, while clinical treatment guidelines are being formulated, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday. Two Taiwanese prosecutors were questioned by Chinese security personnel at their hotel during a trip to China’s Henan Province this month, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said yesterday. US climber Alex Honnold left Taiwan this morning a day after completing a free-solo ascent of Taipei 101, a feat that drew cheers from onlookers and gained widespread international attention.
