Several Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) lawmakers yesterday called on Deputy Minister of Justice Huang Shih-ming (黃世銘), who President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) nominated as the state public prosecutor-general, to reinvestigate the 319 shooting, which they said should be one of the priorities for the top prosecutor.
“It has been six years since the 319 shooting, but we still don’t know the truth behind it. Huang should launch a new probe into the incident immediately after he assumes office,” KMT Legislator Kuo Su-chun (郭素春) said.
Huang is expected to receive confirmation from the KMT-controlled legislature later this month to succeed Chen Tsung-ming (陳聰明), who resigned from the post in January after the Control Yuan approved a motion to impeach him.
The 319 shooting incident refers to an assassination attempt against former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and vice president Annette Lu (呂秀蓮), of the Democratic Progressive Party, in Tainan on March 19, 2004, one day before presidential elections. Authorities concluded in 2005 that one bullet grazed Chen’s stomach and another hit Lu in the knee, and identified the shooter as Chen Yi-hsiung (陳義雄), who was found dead 10 days after the incident. However, the KMT alleged the incident was staged.
During a question-and-answer session with KMT Legislator Lee Fu-hsing (李復興) on the legislative floor later yesterday, Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) said the Special Investigation Unit under the Prosecutor General’s Office has started reinvestigating the case.
