Kuo Kuang Motor Transport said yesterday it was branching out into the domestic tour bus business, with a pilot bus tour to Sun Moon Lake on March 21. Kuo Kuang, the former state-run public bus service, was previously under the administration of the Directorate General of Highways.

It became a private bus service several years ago, providing freeway bus services.

    PACKAGE TOURS

The company will work with travel agencies to offer package tours to group and individual travelers. The two-day package tour to Sun Moon Lake will cover bus fees as well as accommodation. Based on the company¡¦s plan, five buses will depart for Sun Moon Lake daily.

Aside from the Sun Moon Lake tour, the company also plans to offer tour bus services to Alishan (ªü¨½¤s), Kenting, Sitou (·ËÀY) and other popular tourist spots.

    ¡¥LADIES¡¦

Passengers boarding the bus will be served by a new generation of ¡§Kuo Kuang Ladies,¡¨ who will serve drinks and provide travel information.

Liu Hsiu-hsiang (¼B¨q»), one of the original ¡§Kuo Kuang Ladies¡¨ employed by the company in the 1970s, said the ladies must be high school graduates and at least 1.63m tall and not weigh more than 58kg.

The on-board service was canceled in 1993 after the company became private.

The new ¡§Kuo Kuang Ladies¡¨ are college graduates and are mostly hired through employment programs provided by the Ministry of Education.

Asked if the company was planning to hire more college graduates to provide on-board services, the company said this would depend on demand.
