Some 60 countries are participating in the Taipei International Travel Fair, which opens at the Taipei World Trade Center today.

The annual fair gives travel service providers an opportunity to showcase their products, generally with discounts.

In addition to tourism representatives and airlines from many countries, the Council of Agriculture, Taiwan¡¦s 22 cities and counties and some local hotels will participate.

This year¡¦s fair features 1,206 booths.

The Taiwan Visitors Association, which has been hosting the event for 23 years, said would-be travelers can expect to find a good deal on a variety of destinations.

A survey of products showed that round trip tickets to Tokyo could go for as little as NT$2,999, the association said, while tours to Hong Kong could cost around NT$4,400, including accommodations and plane tickets.

Many participating travel agencies promise even bigger discounts for customers who act fast.

Stanley Yen (ÄYªø¹Ø), chairman of the fair¡¦s preparatory committee, said not only can consumers find inexpensive offers at the fair, ¡§the quality of their travel experiences can be enhanced through gathering first-hand information.¡¨

Meanwhile, the Cross-Strait Travel Fair also opens at the Taipei World Trade Center today.

More than 50 Chinese travel agencies offering outbound tours to Taiwan will arrive today to scout for travel routes. Tourism representatives from across China will also promote tourist attractions within their own provinces.

Chou Ching-shyong (©P¼y¶¯), chairman of the Taiwan Visitor Association, said Taiwan had approximately 8 million outbound tourists each year, with about 4.7 million visits by Taiwanese to China since last summer alone.
