Earth Day focus is ‘Green Generation’

A local environmental group called on the public yesterday to take part in events to be held around Taiwan next month as part of a global campaign to celebrate Earth Day on April 22.

The Taiwan Environmental Info Association (TEIA), a partner of the US-based Earth Day Network (EDN), will launch a two-year “Green Generation” campaign on Earth Day.

TEIA permanent director Hsu Hsin-hsin (?Y) cited EDN as saying that the core principles of the new campaign include building a carbon-free future on the foundation of renewable energy, promoting individuals’ pledges of responsible and sustainable consumption, as well as initiating a green economy that helps people escape poverty by generating green jobs and transforming the education system into a green one.

It is crucial for individuals to join the movement to protect the earth, but the scale of participation should also be expanded to involve political, economic and other sectors of society, she said.

To coincide with activities to be held worldwide, Hsu said Taiwan will host a series of events throughout next month and May, including seminars, speeches, a documentary film festival, as well as storytelling sessions that aim at introducing the concept of environmental protection to children.

She encouraged other organizations, schools and businesses to do all they could to help raise public awareness.

The campaign is scheduled to climax next year on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Hsu said.
