A scientist has invented the world¡¦s first chlorophyll organic battery that can supply electricity within 10 seconds of coming into contact with liquids, including water, beverages, or even urine.
Hovering Liao (¹ù«»«), a professor at National Formosa University¡¦s Graduate School of Electro-Optic and Material Science in Yunlin County, told a press conference on Wednesday that the battery can provide electricity for between two days and a week.
While the strength of the battery is about half that of an ordinary battery, its storage capacity is higher than that of Japanese water-powered fuel cells, he said.
The production cost for chlorophyll organic battery is low at about NT$1 to NT$2, Liao said, adding that the battery contains no toxic substances and poses no environmental hazard.
Liao said he was applying for patents in Taiwan, the US and other countries for his new invention and mass production could start in the near future.
Liao, 49, earned his doctorate degree in plasma science and fusion technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992.
