Taipei vegetable and fruit prices set to rise next week

Fruit prices in metropolitan Taipei are expected to increase by 20 percent to 30 percent ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on Sept. 14, although vegetable prices are likely to be cheaper than a year ago, market sources said on Thursday.

To meet demand, a spokesman for Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Co (TAPMC) said it has reached an agreement with producers and distributors that vegetable supplies should reach 6,300 tonnes between next Wednesday and Sept. 14, more than the 5,824 tonnes recorded for the same period last year.

Vegetable supplies in the Taipei area have been stable in recent weeks, with prices ranging between an average of NT$22 and NT$25 per kilogram, down 20 percent to 30 percent from a year earlier, when the average price was NT$30.96.

Environmental protection officials have urged people to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival by admiring the moon instead of spending the day barbecuing.

But TAPMC will ensure adequate supplies of vegetables commonly used in barbecuing, such as corn and sweet pepper, next week, the spokesman said.

TAPMC will supply 3,300 tonnes of seasonal fruit, he said. Prices for pomelos ¡X the most popular fruit during the festival ¡X will differ tremendously in terms of quality, with the top grade reaching NT$1,000 per 6kg, he said.
