    Domestic campaign lacks donations

Taiwanese are being urged not to forget about local public welfare organizations at a time when domestic fundraising efforts have been focused on helping victims of the Sichuan earthquake.

Jill Wu, director of the Modern Women’s Foundation’s (MWF) Planning and Development Department, said on Saturday that a campaign launched by the foundation starting last month to raise funds for women suffering from domestic violence has collected only NT$30,000. The figure is 80 percent below the amount raised in a similar campaign last year, she said.

“In 2006, there were tens or even as many as 100 donors calling our foundation to donate money every day,” Wu said. “This year, there are as few as 10 people a day showing interest in donating money for the women.”

Wu hoped that local residents could understand the needs of domestic groups.

“We don’t mean Sichuan victims are unimportant — we just want to let our people know that there are still many people in our society who really need assistance,” Wu said.
