A Kaohsiung woman was arrested yesterday on suspicion of killing one of her brothers as she attempted to stop a fight between the two men.
Kaohsiung police said Wu Mei-ling (吳美玲) was detained yesterday by the Taipei District Court.
Police said they would review the evidence before deciding whether to charge Wu with murder or manslaughter.
Wu’s two brothers had an altercation on Saturday night while they were drinking at their family home in the Zuoying District (左營) of the city, police said. When the brothers began to fight, Wu tried to stop them but was attacked by her younger brother.
Police said Wu then picked up a fruit knife to defend herself, but as she resisted the attack, she waved the knife and accidentally jabbed it into the left side of her younger brother’s chest.
The man collapsed, bleeding profusely, and died on the way to the hospital.
Officers who later visited the scene of the incident said they found pools of blood.
Neighbors said the Wu family often quarreled, police said.
Police added that Wu said that her brothers often had fights at home, and that she always tried to mediate, but this time it had resulted in the tragic death of one brother.
